margot

I’m trying to reach for the door handle of the car, but I’m buckled over with laughter. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone so funny.

“Whoa,” he says, steadying me. “Here. Let me get that.”

Turning to look at him, I feign a gasp. “That’s so nice of you.”

With one hand still around my waist, he pulls back to look at me. “I’m always nice.” Opening the door, he starts to help me inside. Maybe this is what I need. I need a fun night with a nice, funny guy to make me forget about all things Jackson.

“Margot!”

I freeze because I know that voice. I try to peer over the shoulder blocking my view, but I can’t see him from here.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.” The guy I’m with mutters, and he sounds a little less nice and a little less funny now.

It isn’t until Jackson jogs up to the car and pulls me to him that I can see him clearly. The sudden movement makes me fall into him, and I breathe in the familiar scent of his clean clothes. It’s like all I have to do is inhale and my entire body hums in approval. I brace my hands on his chest, my fingertips taking advantage of being this close to him and running over the muscles of his torso.

I have no self-control.

Everything inside me wants to climb him. Right here. Right now. God, just look at him. The stern line of his jaw, the sharpness behind his eyes, the way his hair curls at the base of his neck. I reach up, tempted to run my fingers through his hair until a tiny voice in the back of my mind scolds me.

We need a clean break.

My hand freezes mid-air, and Jackson gives me a sideways glance. He’s looking at me like there’s something very wrong with me, and I snatch my hand back.

Yes, something is definitely wrong with me.

Jackson looks at my new friend and demands, “What the hell are you doing?”

“Look at her. She’s wasted. I’m taking her home.”

“Hey!” I say, taking offense to that.

Jackson shakes his head, gripping me tighter. “Absolutely fucking not.”

As he tightens his hold, a soft, “Hmm” leaves my lips and I lean into him. He glances down at me with concern and my cheeks flush.

Damn it. I’m like a cat in heat around him.

“Seriously, man? She obviously needs to go home.”

Steadying my shoulders, Jackson turns me to face him and takes my face in his hands. His gray-blue eyes are darker now. It’s not just a storm brewing behind them—it’s a hurricane. “Margot,” he says calmly. “I’m taking you home.”

“Hmm,” I hum happily, loving how it feels to be this close to him.

Loving how it feels to be touched by him.

So much for holding onto my anger.

“Look, I don’t know who you are, but we have plans.”

Jackson breaks his gaze from mine to say, “You don’t need to know who I am.” Annoyance ripples through him before he focuses his attention back on me. “Let’s go home. Okay, Margot?”

“Okay,” I answer breathlessly. Between the alcohol and his touch, I can barely think straight, let alone speak. I thought I needed a fun night with a stranger, but now that Jackson is in front of me, all I want is him. It’s always him.

Without another word, Jackson pulls me to him and walks us toward his car. The guy I was with says something behind us, but Jackson just smooths my hair back and kisses the side of my head. “I leave you alone for five fucking minutes, and you almost get a ride home with some asshole.” He shakes his head disapprovingly, but it only makes me smile.
