Margot:
Yup. I miss Florida.
My first instinct is to say how much I miss her, but I’m not stupid. So instead, I type the next best thing.
Jackson:
Is that all you miss?
Matt and I live close enough to walk to each other’s houses. When we first learned how to drive, we’d find any excuse to get in the car and drive the two minutes, but now that the excitement has worn off, we’re back to walking.
I don’t want to go home, though.
I may have lied to Matt when I said I was tired.
I’m not tired. If anything, getting a text from Margot has me feeling wired.
Taking a seat on a metal electrical box a few houses down, I stare at my phone and wait for her response.
Margot:
Are you asking if I miss you, Jackson?
My mouth pulls into a smile, and I’m just glad Matt isn’t out here. If he saw me smiling down at my phone like an idiot, I’d never hear the end of it. He already knows how much I like this girl. The last thing I need to do is give him more reasons to think I’ve lost my head.
Jackson:
No. I know you miss me.
Just figured I’d ask if there was anything else.
My heel bounces against the concrete slab around the box.
Margot:
No. There’s nothing else.
She didn’t say she misses me, but she doesn’t have to. When it comes to Margot, I know how to read between the lines.
Another text comes in.
Margot:
I got your note.
My heart pounds in my chest. I could play around. I could flirt. I could say just about anything back to that, but if she’s being straightforward enough to bring it up, I’m going to do the same.
Jackson:
I want you at that show in January.
The three dots appear and disappear a few times, and I’m about to send another text when her response finally comes in.
Margot:
Can I ask why?
My eyebrows pull together. One wrong move and I could scare her away. I want to show her that being with me won’t be as hard as she thinks. If she’d just let me prove to her that we can do this, maybe she won’t be so desperate to shut me out. Touring is the one thing I’ve always wanted, but it’s also the one thing holding her back. I just want a little time to show her what it could be like.
