"Breakfast is ready!" Nico called, sticking his head out the backdoor, and Ryk jumped to his feet.

"Nico! We're going out for drinks tonight!"

Ryk chattered on as the two went inside, and I smiled to myself as I waited for Star.

Moon leaped off him as he started to get up, but instead of rushing into the house, he just sat there and waited for Star to be upright. Only when Star started walking did he follow, and I shook my head at the traitor.

"I never expected you to betray me like this, Moon," I said, and Star gave a rough laugh.

"I have no idea why he likes me. Probably because I'm as lazy as him," Star said, his dark eyes twinkling as they peeked at me from behind his brown hair.

"That just might be it," I agreed as we walked into the house, making him chuckle. The sound was warm and deep, and it sent butterflies fluttering through my belly. Uh-oh, trouble alert.

Star

"Ryk, you need to calm down," I said evenly as he bounced around the room a little too fast by human standards.

"I can't. I'm too excited!"

"If you don't sit down, I won't let you have any alcohol tonight," Nico warned, and that worked like a charm. Since Dakota didn't keep any alcohol at home—he wasn't a fan of beer and didn't drink often—Ryk was pretty excited about trying it for the first time tonight. He calmed down almost instantly and quietly settled on the bed beside me.

"Why exactly are we here, Nico?" I asked, turning on my stomach and gazing at him. We still had thirty minutes before we were set to leave, but Nico already looked ready to head out. His black hair was perfectly styled, and he was dressed in a navy blue shirt and faded jeans.

"I just wanted to make sure you both remember to act human around Dakota's friend," he said, and Ryk pouted.

"I'll be good, I promise."

"Says the guy who messes up most frequently," I piped in, and Ryk turned to glare at me. "What? It's true, isn't it?"

"I'm trying, I swear. Things sometimes just slip out," he said, making a face I called his 'puppy face.'

"I know. Just be careful, okay?" Nico asked, and he nodded pitifully.

"Are my clothes okay? I really like them, but I don't know if they're appropriate," he said, glancing down at himself. He'd picked skinny black jeans, paired with a white off-shoulder top that showed off glimpses of his fair skin. While it wasn't a common outfit, it suited him well, especially with the way his red curls hung over his eyes.

"You look really pretty," I assured him, and he grinned, throwing himself on me. "Oof!"

Ryk wrapped his arms around my neck as he half-lay on top of me, and kissed my cheek. "Thanks, Star. You say the sweetest things."

"Get off me!" I growled, and he chuckled before sitting upright.

"You're gonna change, right?" Nico asked, giving me a pointed look, and I frowned as I sat up.

"Can't I go like this?" I asked, glancing down at my comfy clothes. They were soft and worn, something I'd brought over from the demon realm.

"No!" they answered simultaneously, making me roll my eyes.

"Fine, fine. I'll change," I grumbled as I got off the bed. "See you downstairs in twenty."

In my room, I eyed my clothes as I tried to decide. Jeans looked so uncomfortable and constricting, but I didn't have any other outside-appropriate clothes. Picking a loose-fit dark blue jeans that was softer than the others, I paired it with a simple, white button-down and quickly got dressed. Using a little bit of magic, I styled my hair so it wouldn't fall into my eyes and gave myself one last look before checking the time.

Had I really taken fifteen minutes to pick out what to wear?

Shaking my head at myself, I opened my door and found Moon waiting outside. He perked up instantly and waltzed right into the room, bypassing me to hop straight onto my bed.

After rolling around for a bit, he curled up in the middle of the bed, and I chuckled to myself, leaving the door open before going downstairs.

"Oh, hey," I said when I spotted Dakota standing in the middle of the living room. He was staring at his phone and dressed in his usual outdoor outfit of jeans, t-shirt, and jacket.
