"It wasn't your fault, or mine. It was just the situation. Maybe it hadn't been the right time yet, or maybe we really can't make it work without Ryk and Dakota," I reasoned, and he smiled slightly.

"I suppose that's true. Ryk's enthusiasm keeps us going forward even when our own reasons or insecurities make us want to stop," Star said, and I smiled.

"Yeah. And Dakota's straightforwardness helps too," I added, remembering the way Dakota had said he liked all three of us without any compunction.

"I don't regret it, though. Dating you back then," Star said with a soft smile I rarely saw on his face, and I ducked my head to hide my own smile.

"Neither do I," I said in a low voice, keeping my eyes on the cloth in my hands. I'd enjoyed my time with Star, even if neither of us had been fully ready for that relationship.

"Good. That's good," he said, then placed his hand on top of mine, stopping my nervous movements. In this form, his hand was so much bigger than mine. All of him was bigger than me, if I thought about it.

"Nico?" Star asked in a soft voice, and I barely kept myself from jumping when I realized he was much closer to me than I'd thought.

"Y-yeah?" I asked hesitantly, and his thumb brushed comfortingly over my hand.

"May I kiss you?" he asked, and I glanced up at him to find his dark eyes already focused on me.

I licked my lips subconsciously, and his eyes flicked down to them. "Okay," I answered, and he didn't waste a moment in closing the distance between us and pressing his lips to mine.

My grip on the rag tightened as Star kissed me, and I shifted just a little closer to him. Star's free hand came to rest at my hip as he leaned forward, and I brushed the tip of my tongue against his lower lip.

We'd done a lot more than this before, but somehow it felt different now, more intense. Maybe it was because we could sense the bond between us now, or maybe it was because we'd stopped shying away from our feelings. Whatever the reason, it allowed me to kiss Star with my whole heart in a way I hadn't been able to.

Star

After we'd made out for a while, Nico disappeared upstairs to take care of some more chores, and I fell back onto the couch with a sigh.

Moon instantly climbed up on the couch from wherever he'd run off to after the paint debacle, and I picked him up, holding him into the air so I could talk to him face to face. I used my magic to make sure Nico wouldn't hear the conversation I was about to have. I'd die of embarrassment if anyone found out I was talking to the cat.

"Is this what it's supposed to feel like, Moon?" I asked the cat, who looked perfectly content to hang in midair. "This warm, tingly feeling in my chest. I always thought I felt that way because I was really close to Nico and Ryk, but I think I was wrong."

Moon gave a meow that I took to mean he was agreeing with me, and I smiled.

"Have you ever been in love?" I asked, then shook my head at my own idiocy. "What am I saying? I can't believe I'm actually having this conversation with a cat."

"Yeah, I can't believe it either," a voice said, and I jumped to my feet and whirled around in shock, startling Moon into digging all his twenty very sharp claws into my arm.

"Fuck!" I swore as I placed him on the couch and then glared at the newcomer.

"What the fuck, Nox? Couldn't you have knocked? What if Dakota was home?" I demanded as I shook my arm. Moon's claws hadn't actually injured me, but they were still sharp as fuck.

Leaning against the doorway, Nox looked like he owned the place. Even dressed in the pastel yellow t-shirt with a big-ass bunny on it and baggy jeans, he looked like he’d stepped off a runway. The white strand in his otherwise brown hair hung over his sparkling eyes, and he grinned at me before straightening up and approaching me.

Nox used to be the Keeper of the Chasm, responsible for depositing dark souls into the burning pits, but he'd recently retired and was now more or less working as a 'cupid' for Fate. Why he was here, I had no clue.

"I made sure your human wasn't home, of course," he said with a grin. Then his eyes fell on Moon and Candy. "Oh my God, your fur babies are so cute!"

"Fur babies? Really?"

Ignoring me, he rushed to them, and I honestly felt betrayed when Candy started wagging her tail and allowed him to pet her. After treating us like public enemy number one for so many weeks, how dare she accept Nox so easily?

"Oh, hello, Nox," Nico said as he came down the stairs, and I hurried over to him.

"Look at Candy! She's such a jerk," I said with a scowl, and Nico chuckled. He wrapped an arm around my waist, probably in an attempt to comfort me.

"What brings you here today, Nox?" Nico asked, since he was much better at being hospitable than me.

"Oh, Kym and I have spent the past week visiting all the demons and making sure they'll be able to recognize their mates if they stumble across them," Nox said, and I blinked in surprise. Oh, right. I'd almost forgotten about that.
