This is why I have a best friend. Jan gets me. She’s my only friend and has been since high school. We’re complete opposites, yet so in sync. Jan is married, trying to get pregnant, and living her life as a beloved schoolteacher in the suburbs. I’m single, running a successful business, and living within the city. While I’m not jealous of Jan’s life, I am lonely.

It’s not that I think I need a partner to be fulfilled. That I won’t be whole until I have a family. None of that. Some people do need that, and it’s completely fine. I would just like…someone constant in my life—other than my bestie.

I sigh into the phone and Jan snaps at me.

“You’re not going to sit and pout over some douchebag. Listen, go get your vibrator, turn on Kenny Loggins’s “Danger Zone,” and pretend you’re getting railed by some bad boy fighter jet pilot.”

Damn, that’s my ultimate fantasy. I want someone who is going to send me soaring: fast, hard, flipped, and insanely wild. Take me to their danger zone.

“See, you get me. I bet if you had a dick, it’d be a monster penis.”

“Journi. We’ve talked about this. I’m five-two. There’s no way I’d have a monstrously large wang. Also, we’d never work. I’m too vanilla.”

“No way we could add some syrup?”

“Not even sprinkles.”

“Chocolate chips?”

“Nope. And no cookie crumbles or fruit either. That just sounds sticky and messy. A vaginal infection waiting to happen.”

“You’re right.” I release another heavy sigh into the phone and then laugh at how ridiculous we are and I love it. “Besides, we’d never work because who says wang?”

Jan can’t say penis, cock, or dick. It’s always wang. The reason for this none of us understands. My laughter fades into another overly dramatic sigh. I really do love my best friend. Even when I make it awkward and joke about us being lovers, she rolls with it. Not that I haven’t wondered… After so many failed relationships, how could I not? But I’d never risk losing her friendship. She’s also madly in love and in a beautiful marriage. Her life is perfect…for her. Me? I could never be content with the cookie-cutter life.

I want crazy romance. I want chaos and unpredictable days. There can be some lowkey moments, but I want every single day to be memorable. Jan has told me that even the smallest moments that seemed insignificant have been the best days of her life. I always smile like I get it, but what she’s saying is way over my head. As long as she’s happy. Gag.

“Hey, why don’t you go to the cabin with us?” She interrupts my internal musings.

“Your parents’ cabin?”

“Yeah! It’ll be fun!”

The idea of spending a weekend at a cabin doesn’t sound that fun. Beach house? Condo? Yes. Count me in. But a cabin in the woods… All I can think of is the setting for a low-budget, cheesy slasher flick. I make a noise of hesitation, so Jan continues in her plea.

“Please? I think it’ll do you good. Are you too chicken to try something new?'“

She actually played that card with me. Chicken? I never back down from a challenge, and this bitch knows it. “Fine.”

“Great! We can pick—”

“Absolutely not. I’m taking my own ride. I know the kind of music you and Max listen to in the car, and no. Just…no. Send me the address.” They’re both into musicals and belt the lyrics. I am not being an extra in their car karaoke theater addition. Let’s keep that a two-man show.

“You know. You could even go a day early to have some time to yourself.”

“I live by myself. What do you mean ‘time to myself’?”

“There’s something different about being alone, looking out over the mountains, smelling the fresh air, nature.”

“Maybe.”

“Are you sure it won’t be weird with me, you, and Max?”

“I’ll invite Larissa, too!”

Her sister? We’ve never hung out. Then it dawns on me… “Wait a freaking minute…is this your family vacation you go on every year?”

“I’ll see you tomorrow!”
