BOBBY JUST CAME AND PICKED ME UP. I STUCK MY HEAD IN AND SAW YOU WITH THAT GUY WE WERE TALKING ABOUT, SO I FIGURED YOU’RE OKAY. LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT ME TO COME BACK AND PICK YOU UP. WE CAN BE THERE IN FIVE MINUTES.

Am I okay?

Going home with a total stranger is about as irresponsible an idea as I've ever had—one Mom and Dad would certainly completely lose their shit over—but there's something about him, something I can't ignore.

This might be my one night of freedom. I can’t let this opportunity go. Not when they’ll never let this happen again.

I text her back.

I’m okay. I’ll let you know where I am and send you proof of life in the morning.

She replies almost instantly.

GO GET SOME BEFORE YOUR PARENTS LOCK YOU BACK UP AGAIN!

I let out a laugh at her words of encouragement and turn back to face Nolan. He leans against the pool table, observing everything but giving me space.

His brow furrows with concern. “She good?”

Nodding, I push the phone back into my purse. “She's with her boyfriend. He only lives a few blocks from here. He was going to meet us, but he just picked her up instead.”

“What about you? Are you good?”

Such a loaded question.

Things haven’t felt “good” in such a long time, but tonight, the brief time I’ve spent with him has given me a sense of freedom and rightness I can’t remember ever experiencing.

I smile at him and grab my purse. “I will be when we get out of here.”

A grin spreads across his lips, and he steps forward and holds out his hand. I slip mine into it, and the heat from his firm grip warms me from the inside out. Despite that, a shiver rolls through me. Anticipation of knowing what's coming and how good it's going to be.

If it is only for one night, I’m going to enjoy the hell out of it.

Chapter 2

Jack

We step out of the bar onto the street, and the cool, early spring wind whips off Lake Michigan and down around us, sending a chill through me. I shiver slightly, the open-backed, short dress not giving me much protection from the feature that gave this city its nickname.

Nolan wraps a muscular arm around me and pulls me to his side, glancing at his phone. “Our ride will be here in one minute.”

The heat of his hard body pressed against mine relieves some of the chill—so does knowing what will happen as soon as we get into that car. This sizzling charge between us sparks like fireworks in the night as I gaze up at him, again imagining how that strong jaw covered in a well-groomed beard would abrade my thighs.

My fingers itch to run through the dark, unruly hair blowing in the breeze, but before I can reach up to grab it, a black Town Car pulls up at the curb.

Nolan ushers me toward it with a gentle hand on my back.

I raise an eyebrow. “Wow. Fancy.”

He chuckles. “I thought I’d spring for the upgrade tonight.”

“Trying to impress me?”

A slow smile spreads across his lips as he opens the door for me. “Do I need to?”

Instead of answering him, I just give a sly smile and climb inside, sliding across the plush leather seat. Nolan follows, closing the door behind him, and the driver glances over his shoulder at us through an open privacy window.

“Palmer House?”
