“Like a bloody queen.”

“I’m scared,” she says.

“I know.” I push out a breath. “So let’s start with dinner. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“What did you do today?” I ask her.

“You really want to know?”

“Of course. I want to know everything about you.”

“I collected more lavender from the hillside and then hit my workshop.”

“And what do you do there?”

“I make soaps and lotions and things like that with natural ingredients.”

“That’s amazing.”

“Thanks.”

“What else?”

“I shipped some packages, paid some invoices, updated my website, boring stuff.”

“I don’t think any of it is boring,” I tell her honestly.

“What did you do today?” she asks.

“I went to the airfield and met the SAR team,” I tell her.

“I bet that was interesting,” she says to her wine.

“You don’t know the half of it,” I tell her. “When I walked in everyone was trying to pretend like you couldn’t cut the tension between Merritt and Wyatt with a knife.”

“Yikes.”

“Yikes is right. Then he said something that hurt her, and she walked out.”

“Oh no.”

“Then Mason told him he needed to apologize and sort that out, so he did.”

“Good for Mason.”

“Then we got down to business.”

“Sounds like a full day,” she says.

“And that was all before lunch,” I answer. “After some team interviews, Merritt got a little salty when Wyatt said he was dating a boring girl because she’s reliable.”

“Ouch.”

“Agreed. Not his finer moment. But she followed it up with detailing her plans for Anchorage and whom she might, ahh… find there.”

“Oh Merritt.”
