“Raegan, what’s up?” She exhales a relieved breath.

“I need help. It’s Saffie.” She doesn’t say anything more, just heads to the stairs. Moving so quickly I would swear she had her skates on. My heart pounds as I follow her. “I left her at the bottom of the stairs. I couldn’t get her up them.”

“Alone?” As the words leave my mouth, I see Saffie sitting, hunched a bit against the wall at the ground floor landing with Davey from the JV team standing over her. Not thinking or seeing past the adrenaline rush propelling me, I leap down the last few stairs and shove Davey. “Back the fuck up, bro!” He stumbles and hits the wall hard, drawing attention from people in the foyer. I ignore their curious looks and murmurs of “what the fuck?”

Saffie darts a glance up at me, messy bun more mess than bun, with an exasperated look on her face. “Hey! He was being nice.” Her words are slurred. I bet he fucking was.

Davey holds his hands up, “Sexy, I was just waiting for you, I swear. Raegan told me to wait with her so she could get you.” His voice cracks on the last word sounding like a thirteen-year-old going through puberty. “I would never fuck around like that, especially here.”

He knows if he did and I found out, I would end his hockey career at FU so fucking quick. I don’t apologize to him, just nod my head curtly. Let Rae console him. My focus is on Saffie. Squatting down so I’m eye level and don’t need to yell to be heard, I ask, “Can you stand?” She glares at me with fire in her eyes. The gray looking misted over like fog on the harbor. I always love seeing that fire, but it brings some relief with it now. At least I know she’s not gonna die of alcohol poisoning on my watch. My heart rate falls back into a normal cadence, and I smile at her anger. I can’t decide what she’s more mad about, me being here coming to her rescue or the fact that she won’t be able to stand upright without my help. Without waiting for her to answer, I scoop her under her legs and around her back and stand. I fully expect a fight, but she must realize it won’t do her any good.

“Do you ever wear clothes?” Her voice is sleepy but still full of fight and dislike for me.

“I try not to.” I look down at her and wink, my dimples flashing with the smile I hit her with. It’s not a lie.

She snorts a breath of disgust. “You really should at least wear a shirt. Especially when you’re wearing sweatpants. It’s…indecent.” The last word slips from her lips as her eyes flutter closed, her head resting against my shoulder as I take the two flights of stairs to my room, laughing all the way and loving that she thinks me shirtless is indecent.

When I get to the door, I ease us through without pinging her head against the frame and lead us to my bed. Rae rushes past me to throw back the covers. I had forgotten all about her even being there.

“You gonna stay here too?” I ask quietly as I ease Saffie down, careful not to jostle her too much.

“I can’t! I’m freaking out right now. I have to be on the ice by five o’clock because of half the team breaking curfew on Friday, and now here I am, breaking curfew big time, and my cousin is passed out drunk. Like, are you kidding?” she all but screeches.

“Rae. Holy shit, girl. Slow your roll.” I pull out my phone and text Murphy. “Take her shoes off for me,” I instruct to give her something to do other than tweaking.

Me: Hey, you drinking?

Murph: You know better.

Me: yeah, I do. Sending Rae down. She needs a ride home. JUST a ride home.

Murph: I got her. Tell her I’ll meet her by the front door.

Me: she’ll be there in two.

“Murphy will drive you to your dorm so you’re not walking back by yourself,” I tell her, tossing my phone on the foot of the bed.

“Thank you! But what about my cousin? Your dad finds out, and she’s dead.” Her brows are pulled in worry, her pink hair looking like she’s stuck her finger in an outlet. “I’ll cover for her. If my dad finds out, I’ll say we were studying, and she fell asleep.” I shrug. “No big deal. It was his idea for me to tutor her anyway.”

“I can’t leave her here by herself!” Rae whisper-shouts frantically.

“Ummm…why? She’s safer here than she would be passed out drunk in her dorm.” Rae knows me. “I don’t need to take advantage of anyone, Raegan. If I want ass, I’ll go downstairs and get ass.”

She gnaws on her bottom lip. “You’re right. She’ll be pissed that I left her with you, though.”

“She’ll get over it. Now go before Murphy comes looking for you. I’ve got her. I promise.”

Raegan finally relents. I know that she’s not worried about me but worried about how mad her cousin will be that she left her with the big bad hockey player. Anybody else, and this would be the worst idea in the fucking world. Rae knows me, though, and knows my ma raised me to respect women, and that goes double when they’re drunk out of their fucking minds.

“Okay. Tell her not to be mad at me when she wakes up. Thank you!” With a quick hug, she dashes out of my room like Saffie might all of a sudden jump up and chase after her swinging. I watch her go down the steps before closing and locking the door, turning for the bed and my dinging phone.

Murph: Got her

Me: That was quick

Murph: That’s what she said *winky emoji*

I laugh at his dumb ass. That’s what she said jokes will never get old.
