“What’s going on?”

Unable to hold back my sobs, I ran up the stairs and unlocked my door before I responded. “Mark and I broke up.”

“Oh no—”

“And I got fired.” I added as I tossed my bag by the front door and collapsed onto my couch.

“Shit,” she muttered.

“You could say that again.”

I ended up telling her everything that happened and by the end of our conversation some of the sadness that had been weighing on me began to melt away and was replaced with anger.

“Well, Mark sounds like a prick and I’m glad you found out now before you got too attached.”

“Pricks do seem to be my type. What the hell is wrong with me?”

She sighed. “Nothing is wrong with you, babe. You’re just a hopeless romantic who likes to see the good in people.”

“Hopeless is right.” I gave a mirthless laugh.

“Stop it. One day the right guy will come along who will appreciate that about you.”

“I’m not sure I believe that but thank you.” Our conversation was interrupted by a piercing scream. “Is that Stella?”

Stella was Simone’s three year old daughter who, despite being the most adorable toddler, lacked volume control at times.

“Yeah.” She chuckled. “Kyle just got home. He promised her he’d get off early today and we’d spend the day at the beach followed by a trip to the ice cream shop.”

“Don’t let me keep you. Go have fun and we can chat some more tomorrow.”

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yeah,” I lied. I wasn’t, but I knew I would be…eventually.

“Okay. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

After we hung up, I headed to the shower to wash the hospital off me. I planned to spend the rest of the day in my pajamas and watching some trashy reality TV while eating my weight in Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Later in the evening, while sitting on the couch, I thought of all the things I had to figure out, starting with what I was going to do about a job. Hudson Memorial wasn’t far from my apartment and the thought of passing by it every time I left home was depressing. I needed to go somewhere I could clear my head, and I knew just the place.

Chapter 4

Blaine

The morning started the way I preferred; me alone in my bed. Harmony had mentioned she had an early morning, so after fucking her in my entryway and again in my bed, she’d called a rideshare and headed home.

Grabbing my phone off the nightstand, I saw I had a text from my ex.

Claudia: I heard about the fight. Are you good?

It seemed word about the fight had traveled fast, and even though the two of us had remained friends after our breakup and talked from time to time, I was a bit surprised she was making sure I was okay, considering it was her boyfriend’s ass I’d kicked.

Me: Yeah, I’m good.

Claudia: What happened?

Me: Have you talked to Corey?
