Maybe I’d been wrong about what she was doing on the beach.

“Sorry about being a dick earlier.” I pointed at the camera next to her. “I thought you were paparazzi.”

“Oh, yeah. I mean, no. I’m not,” she stumbled over her words. “Just out here taking pictures of the ocean.”

“Well, I feel bad for making you cry—”

She shook her head. “You didn’t make me cry. Things are just shitty right now.”

“I get that. Things have been kind of shitty for me too.”

I didn’t make it a habit of sharing stuff with strangers, but there was something about our brief interaction that felt comfortable. It was odd.

She arched an eyebrow as she looked up at me. “I might have read something about that.”

“Does that mean you know who I am?”

She smiled. “Maybe.”

Her smile lit up her face, and it became impossible to ignore her beauty. Her big blue eyes sparkled like the sky despite being red-rimmed and glassy, and her blonde hair framed her gorgeous face perfectly.

“Since you know my name, it only seems fair that you tell me yours.”

She lifted her hand to shake mine. “I’m Kayla.”

“Nice to meet you, Kayla. Care if I join you?”

“It’s a public beach.” She shrugged but couldn’t hide her smirk. “You can sit anywhere you want.”

“Sassy.” I winked as I dropped beside her. “I like it.”

We were silent for a couple of minutes as we watched the waves roll in, however I wanted to know why she was so upset. “You want to talk about it?”

“You don’t want to hear about my problems.”

I bumped her shoulder with mine. “I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t.”

“Well, let’s see.” She let out a breath. “I got fired yesterday.”

“That sucks.” I’d never been sacked from a job before, but I could imagine how upsetting that would be.

“It gets better.” She took another deep breath. “After being escorted out of the hospital where I worked, I went to my boyfriend’s house to talk to him about it, but we broke up instead.”

My mouth dropped open. “Wow. You definitely win the award for the shittiest day.”

“Gee, thanks!” She rolled her eyes.

Even though she was going through a tough time, I could tell she had a good vibe, it made me sort of happy to know there wasn’t a boyfriend in the picture any longer.

Did that make me a dick?

Chapter 5

Kayla

I wanted to pinch myself. There was no way I was sitting on the beach, having a casual conversation with Blaine freaking Roberts.

Before I’d gone to bed the night before, I called my Aunt Debbie, who managed a small resort in Santa Barbara with her husband. She’d offered for me to stay at the hotel many times, but I’d always been busy with school or work. Since my job was no longer an issue, I asked if I could come up for a couple of days.
