When we reached my room, I held the door open for her. She entered first but came to a stop only a few feet inside.

“Wow, this room is incredible.”

The setting sunlight streamed into the living room of my suite from the enormous sliding glass door which framed the spectacular ocean view.

“After we order our food, we can sit out on the balcony.” I grabbed the room service menu and handed it to her.

She decided on the sea scallops while I settled on the black cod. I called in the order, adding a bottle of wine to our meal, and then grabbed two bottles of water and led Kayla to the balcony. There was a table and chairs where we could enjoy our dinner and a loveseat if we wanted something a little more comfortable to sit on. I left the sliding door open to hear the server knock when our food arrived and took a seat on the loveseat next to my date.

“This view is stunning,” she said as I opened the bottle and handed it to her.

“It’s pretty good from where I’m sitting as well,” I admitted as I stared at her.

She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and smiled. “Thank you.”

We made small talk until a knock on the door interrupted our conversation. “I thought we could eat out here. Is that okay with you?” I asked.

She nodded. “Absolutely.”

I slipped inside and opened the door.

“Good evening, Mr. Roberts. Where would you like your meal set up?”

I pointed toward the balcony. “We’re going to eat outside.”

Once the table was set, I pulled out a chair for Kayla and poured us each a glass of wine. I sat next to her, so we both had a view of the water. Our original dinner plans may have gotten messed up earlier, but dinner on the balcony was better and much more romantic. The sun was just starting to set, casting an orange and pink glow in the sky. There weren’t any people on the beach below us, so the only sound was the waves rolling in.

“This looks delicious,” she said as we began to eat.

“So, since you’re staying at the resort, I’m guessing you aren’t a local. Where do you live?”

She took a sip of her water. “I’m from San Diego.”

A wide smile spread across my face. I wasn’t looking for a relationship, but the realization that I could see her again, since she didn’t live far from LA, sent a jolt of excitement through me.

“Have you always lived in San Diego?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No. I was born and raised just a little east of LA. I moved to San Diego for college.”

“Really? Where?” I was curious since I also grew up outside of LA.

“Glendora.”

“No way. We grew up in neighboring cities. I’m from Covina.”

“I know,” she mumbled, though I barely heard her.

“What was that?”

“Okay.” She wiped her mouth with a napkin. “This is super embarrassing. I… uh… sort of had a huge crush on you, and it feels super disingenuous to sit here and ask you a bunch of random first date questions when I looked for any information I could find on you when I was younger.”

I barked out a laugh. “Had a crush or currently have one?”

She rolled her eyes. “Are you laughing at me?”

“Not at all,” I lied. “I think it’s actually pretty hot that you have a crush on me.”

“I said had.” She stuck out her tongue.
