“Wow!” Violet says. “That’d make a few apple pies.”

“Pretty sure my mama could go through them.” He chuckles. “Make sure to try one of her pies when you’re done picking.”

“That sounds like a delicious idea.”

“Do they have bees here to help with the pollination?” I ask.

“No, we rent them.”

“You can rent bees?” Violet asks, as shocked as I am.

“You can,” he says, pulling the wagon to a stop and jumping down.

Moving around to the back, he opens the tailgate and allows people to exit. Violet jumps down excitedly. The man hands out small paper bags for us to put our apples into. Violet grabs both a bag for us.

“Good luck. I’ll be back around about every twenty minutes if you don’t want to walk back,” the man says cheerfully before turning stern. “Remember, no climbing the trees, and only pick what you intend to purchase.”

“Thanks for the ride,” Violet says in a friendly tone as he jumps back into the wagon. Turning toward me, she asks with a giggle, “I wonder where you go to rent bees?”

“No idea.” I turn to walk farther into the orchard and away from the other people.

“I’m totally going down that rabbit hole later,” she tells me, skipping along the path.

“Which tree looks good?” I ask, grabbing her hand and letting it swing between us.

“This one!” Violet drops my hand and runs to the nearest tree, which she hugs tightly.

“Be careful,” I admonish. “Don’t hurt the tree.”

“I’m showing it love,” she argues, pouting but moving away from the tree’s base.

“I should’ve gotten a picture of that,” I admit, taking my phone from my back pocket and pointing the camera in her direction. “Say cheese.”

“Cheese!”

Violet smiles brightly, then poses adorably and dramatically for the camera. Somehow through my laughter, I’m able to catch them all. After several selfies, we actually start picking apples.

“Need some help?” I ask, watching Violet jumping up and down, trying to get a bright red, juicy-looking apple from a high branch.

“Yes, please,” she says politely, catching her breath and smiling at me.

“All you need to do is ask, little professor.”

I pluck the fruit from the branch and hand it to her. I’m rewarded with a spontaneous squeeze and kiss on the cheek.

“Thank you, Daddy, this one looks delicious.”

“Did you bring your phone?”

“Yes.” She unhooks one of the shoulder straps of her backpack and swings it around in front of her body to dig into the pocket. “Are you going to show me how to take pictures?”

“That’s the plan,” I tell her, setting the bag of apples on the ground and stepping forward. “You can help me practice for the parents’ workshop.”

“I’m your test subject?” She giggles.

“Yes,” I say, smiling and moving to stand beside her. “Now, let’s take a picture of the bag of apples.”

I go over where to stand in relation to where light is coming from, and how the perspective changes based on the angle you’re taking your shot. Violet listens attentively and asks several questions.
