“Yes, I want my little professor to live with me so I can take care of her,” he says, running his hand along my back, the warmth of his touch spreading into my chest. He smiles. “I need someone to enjoy the playroom and all the games I have.”

“Yes, Daddy, I’ll move in with you!” I fling my arms around his neck and pepper his face with kisses. How could I say no?

Epilogue

Marcus

“Thank you for all your help today,” Etienne says, handing me a beer.

“Of course.” I grin at the little girls toasting marshmallows by the fire pit.

After such a long day, even before dinner, they deserve a treat for moving Violet into my friend’s house. I’ll admit to being jealous that he has found his perfect little girl. I unknowingly ruined my chances ages ago.

“Man, why don’t you make the first move?”

I break my gaze from Fawn and turn to see Etienne’s eyebrows raised.

“It’s complicated,” I say, looking back at the sweet little girl smiling and handing Violet and Sam s’mores.

“How? You know she’s a little, and you’re both clearly attracted to each other,” Etienne says, sounding almost exasperated.

“I knew her. A long time ago,” I tell him, flipping the burgers on the grill.

“You’re going to have to give me more, buddy.”

“We hooked up in college,” I tell him, turning to face him.

“What?”

“One night. I—I never called her.” I’m ashamed of my behavior. How I treated such a sweet, kindhearted girl.

“Man, that was over a decade ago, and you were what, eighteen?”

“Nineteen.”

“We all do stupid shit at that age. That’s no reason not to try again.”

“I’m not sure. What would I even say to her?”

“Maybe you should start by saying I’m sorry?” He chuckles into his beer.

“I doubt it would be that easy.”

“You won’t know until you try,” he says, grabbing tongs and turning the hotdogs. He turns toward the girls. “Girls, I hope you’re leaving room. Dinner’s almost ready.”

“Yes, Daddy,” Violet calls, giving him a loving smile.

My heart aches with longing for what they have.

“Do you want one, Marcus?” Fawn asks shyly as the girls walk across the lawn toward us, holding plates of the sticky chocolate treat.
