“I haven’t heard anything. But I sent off five new résumés today. Something is bound to hit.”

“It’ll happen, baby girl. How was class?”

“Well…” I drop my backpack on the ground and pull out my beautiful white workout outfit that I purchased with the gift cards I’d gotten for my birthday. I shake my head when I see the dark gray stains all over both the top and the leggings. “I was standing waiting for the bus when some rich guy in a fancy Jaguar eyed me. I thought we had a moment. Until he rolled past and his car completely doused me in a tidal wave of rainwater.”

I spray every last drop of Shout left in the bottle on the stains before dropping both pieces in the washer and starting the machine.

“Typical man. They promise you the world and then run off with the secretary.”

Here we go.

My father left my mother for his office manager during my freshman year in college, devastating us both. He married her and now has a new baby, Rafe, the son he’d always wanted apparently.

“Well, I don’t think Jag Hag was promising me anything more than a slow perusal. However, he could have gotten out of the car and offered me some assistance,” I hissed.

“This is why I tell you this, my sweet girl. Never trust a man. Especially one in fancy clothing who drives a Jag. They are nothing but trouble.”

She’s preaching to the choir.

Chapter 2

Aidan

“Off to Pilates? It’s your favorite night of the week, right?” I ask as Mya and Emma stop in my office on their way out. They’re busy working mothers, but they set one night a week aside to go to Pilates together.

I have a meeting with my boss Jack in a few minutes, so I’m not ready to cut out just yet. He’s the first name on the door when you enter our law firm. I’m in the running to make partner, which means I stay late most nights.

“Yes. Why don’t you come with us sometime? You’d love our instructor. She’s so hot,” Emma says as she waggles her brows and they both drop in the leather chairs across from my desk.

“He’s still dating, um…” Mya taps her pointer finger against her lips. “Jorge? Is that her name?”

Emma barks out a laugh. “Hortance,” she says in her haughtiest tone.

They met her once. It wasn’t a fabulous get-together as Hortance rarely socializes outside of her own friend group. And the Mean Mug, the girls’ and their husbands’ favorite hangout, was not up to Hortance’s standards. Nor was I, if I were being honest.

I roll my eyes. “Hortance and I are no longer together. We broke up a week ago.”

“I can’t say I’m disappointed. She was a real piece of work.” Mya shrugs.

“She gave me the number for her plastic surgeon when we were at dinner,” Emma says with complete appall, shaking her head. “She said I’d be needing it soon.”

“Hey, Jorge’s eyebrows barely moved through that entire meal, so her Botox is clearly on point.”

I laugh that Mya still refuses to call Hortance by her name.

“Okay, okay, I get it. We only went out three or four times. She’s the daughter of my dentist and the guy would not stop pushing. I couldn’t show up for another cleaning without at least saying we gave it a try.”

“You’re such a good guy, Aidan. And Jesse would not want you missing a dental cleaning. You know his obsession with your pearly whites,” Mya says, and we all three can’t help but chuckle. Mya and I had a little flirtation when we first met. I even took her out once, but she was already invested in her neighbor Jesse Taylor, and he did not hide his jealousy the first few times I met him. He has all sorts of nicknames for my nice set of chompers, which he still pulls out regularly. Now we’re all good friends, and it’s become the running joke.

“How is it going to be when you see your dentist next?” Emma asks.

“Not to worry. Seeing as Hortance brought in a third party over to her apartment, her prep school roommate, Evangeline, and they tried to sell me on having what they called an Upper East Side threesome. They claimed everyone was doing it. And then the lovely, very married Evangeline pulled out a set of handcuffs and a taser,” I pause as they both gape at me. “I can’t make this shit up. I got the hell out of there and ended things later that night over the phone. I think she’ll come up with a good reason why we aren’t together for her father, and I’m off the hook. We had nothing in common inside or outside of the bedroom.”

Emma bursts out laughing, and Mya sits there with her eyes doubled in size, gaping at me.

“Where did their parents come up with these ridiculous names, anyway? Hortance and Evangeline? I mean, they're trying to give them these pretentious, sophisticated names—and their girls are just freaks in the sheets. You didn’t want to dip your toe in the threesome pond?” Emma raises a brow.

Mya shrugs. “I kinda dig the name Evangeline.”
