“Who?”

“You and Hortance.”

I close my eyes and feel like I’m melting into the chair.

“Aidan.”

I open my eyes and see a white coat.

“You and Hortance?” the coat asks.

I chuckle and then laugh harder the more I think about it. “Oh, funny story. Hortance wanted threesomes and handcuffs, and while a lot of guys might be into that, I’m more of a one-on-one, all-hands-on-deck kind of guy when it comes to sex. No offense to her and Evangeline, it just wasn’t my cuppa.”

I try to lift the mask off my face because somewhere around saying one-on-one, I couldn’t feel my lips at all, and my words started sounding like one big jumble. Dr. Rooney keeps the mask pressed against my face and asks more questions, something about did I really expect him to believe I wasn’t into all that? Something like that? I’m not sure, but it just sounds so funny that I try to answer but can’t stop fucking laughing.

He sticks the tools in my mouth and continues to put the mask on me here and there. Who knew going to the dentist could be so hilarious? I’ve never felt better. Sign me up for fillings any time.

Dr. Rooney says something, and I go to stand and lean into him. He grips my arm and leads me out the door. I don’t know what I’d do without him.

I take an Uber back to work, glad that it’s not far, because I want to get back to work and tell Mazie what a great experience I just had.

By the time I get there, some of the euphoria has worn off and my head is starting to hurt.

Chapter 7

Mazie

I’ve had a great first week of work. The only bummer has been that I haven’t seen Aidan as much as I thought I would. Miranda asks me to take a shipment down to the first floor in the afternoon, so we can catch the delivery guy before he’s done for the day, and I lug the heavy box onto the elevator. When the door dings and I step off, I can’t see where I’m going very well and collide into someone, a thud and a yelp quickly following.

I set the box down and glance down at Aidan in horror, reaching out to help him up.

“I’m so sorry.”

He laughs and then holds his head and winces.

“Are you okay?” He looks pale, and I don’t know, like maybe he’s been day drinking over lunch.

He takes my hand and I have to work harder than I expected to pull him up.

“I’m not feeling so great,” he says. He stands up, but he leans into me and surprises me when he puts his hands on my shoulders. “I’m sorry. I can’t seem to stay upright.”

“What happened? Are you drunk?” I whisper.

His eyes grow wide. “No. I don’t drink at work,” he sputters and then laughs and shakes his head. “What do they give you at the dentist to make you loopy?”

“Laughing gas?”

“Does that make you laugh and get a headache and feel like you might hurl?” He holds his stomach and I take his arm and lead him outside, just in case he’s about to lose his lunch.

“I’ve never seen it affect anyone like this,” I admit. He leans over and takes huge gulps of air. When he turns and looks at me out of the corner of his eye, he sighs.

“You’re so fucking beautiful,” he says. He swipes a hand down his face as I try to subtly fan the heat off my face at his words.

“They must’ve given you something because you’re talking nonsense,” I tell him. I can’t help but smile when he snorts out a laugh and tries to stand up all the way.

“This is why I don’t drink,” he says. “I’m a lightweight everything.” He holds up a hand and drops it like it’s too heavy to stay upright for even a second. “No coffee for me or I’m like this.” His eyes bug out and I crack up. “Booze, no go. Nyquil, fuhgeddaboudit.” He looks at me again like he’s seeing me for the first time and my heart pounds harder, faster. “Geez, your lips are like cushions I’d like to sit on.”

I put my hand over my mouth, and he leans over, pushing my hair back.
