Mazie

Is it normal to have endless sexual dreams about your new bestie? The past few days I’ve woken up feeling like I’m coming down from the best night of sex in my life, only to realize that I’m alone in my bed. But Aidan’s dirty talk is definitely working for me in real life and in my dreams. We’ve spent so much time together over the past two weeks that it’s confusing me.

From boat rides and cycling in Central Park to late-night old black-and-white movies at the little vintage theater up the street. We’ve eaten hot dogs on a park bench, nachos from a food truck, and last night, we met Mya and Emma and their hubbies, Jesse and Spence, for a happy hour at Mean Mug.

My favorite part of the night was when Jesse teased Aidan mercilessly about his perfect white chompers, and I had the chance to tell them about the laughing gas scandal. The noise level at our table got out of control, but I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. And when their other brothers, Gus and Caden came in too, along with their brother-in-law, Beck, it was a full-on party. Those G.D. Taylors know how to have a good time.

After meeting Gus, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to look at an olive the same way. He analyzed the shit out of every condiment that arrived on the table, inspecting each glass to make sure there were no olives involved in our happy hour.

And Aidan just kept looking over at me and laughing like we had an inside joke going with each other. I loved every second of it.

The lines are blurring, and I don’t know what it means. I desperately want him to kiss me, but at the same time, I’ll be furious at him if he does. How messed up is that?

I think I need some space.

I’m getting too attached.

And I know better.

I walk to the office, the sun just barely waking up and my phone dings in my purse. “Hey, Mama.”

“Well, aren’t you the busy little bee? I’ve barely talked to you since you started that job.” I can see her rolling her eyes even though we aren’t together.

“I have talked to you every single day since I started,” I say over a laugh. She’s so dramatic sometimes.

“Yeah, but they haven’t been long conversations. Tell me what’s happening over there?”

I chew on my thumbnail for a moment. I’ve never had secrets from my mother. But I know she will frown upon how much time I’m spending with Aidan. He’s kind of my boss even though he doesn’t think he is. But he’s high up at the office I work at, and it would be very inappropriate to allow things to be romantic.

But those damn lips. The way his shoulders strain against his dress shirt. And the way he makes me feel.

Nope. Not going there.

“I’ve just been working a lot. And I told you I’ve made a few friends at the office. Obviously, Mya and Emma and I already knew one another before I started.”

“Well, that makes work extra fun. I’m so proud of you, my love. Guess who called me yesterday?”

“Who?”

“Your father,” she hisses. “He said he’s left you a few messages, and he asked me if you were all right.”

I’ve been avoiding his calls. He forgot my birthday and it stung. I know I’m behaving like a child, but my father’s rejection over the past few years has hurt me deeply. He’s always too busy for me now. His attention is on little Rafe, and I feel like shit that I’m jealous of a two-year-old.

“I know. I’ll call him. I’ve just been busy.”

“Well, I know he hasn’t shown up for you much the past few years, and as much as I curse the ground he walks on, I do know that he loves you, Mazie. Don’t let my disdain for the man taint your relationship with him.”

He did leave both of us, so I’ve felt the betrayal as well. But I do want to find peace with him and move forward.

“Who are you and what have you done with my cynical mother?” I tease.

“Oh, she’s still in here. But I don’t want you fighting my battles.”

“I won’t.” I think about how to word the next thing I’m going to share. “There’s a guy at my office, Aidan, and we’ve become pretty good friends. You’d really like him.”

She’s quiet.

“There’s always a guy at the office, my girl. Just be careful. Check his finger for tan lines. You know how they can be.”
