Chapter3

Carter

Walkingout of the club is hard as hell. I immediately felt an intense connection to Emersyn, which was completely unexpected. She’s sassy and brazen, a woman who seems to meet any challenge with a ferocity I haven’t seen before. I was completely taken aback when she removed the keycard from my wallet, and the promise of seeing her again is the only reason I’m able to climb into the back of the limo.

Liam is hanging out of the sunroof, drunkenly flirting with women walking along the boulevard, while Rhys tries aimlessly to get him seated so the driver can pull away from the curb. It doesn’t help that the rest of the guys are spurring Liam on, but I’ve always been the voice of reason when he gets out of hand. It’s the very reason I’m his best man. I have a responsibility to ensure Liam’s prepared to meet his bride at the altar without staggering through his vows hungover. He had fun, enjoyed his last night as a bachelor. Now it’s time to get his ass back to the resort so I can pump him full of water and sober him up.

I pull my phone out of my pocket, and I don’t even bother checking the notifications. “Siri, call Layla,” I say as Rhys grabs Liam’s belt buckle and yanks him through the sunroof.

Liam scrubs his hand over his face and slurs together a sentence that is oddly coherent. “Not cool, man.” I toss my phone on the seat beside me and laugh.

“Party’s over, my man. Let’s get you back to the hotel and get some food and water in you. Maybe a shower. Right now you smell like liquor and bad decisions.”

“Bad decisions.” Liam chuckles. “That’s rich coming from the king of bad decisions. Laney. Need I say more?”

“Don’t be a dick, Liam. You told me to put Laney in my rearview and have fun for the night, and I did. But because I’m your babysitter and I value my balls, we had to get your ass away from the dancers before you did something you’d later regret.”

“Laney’s a bitch, Car. You eye fucked Emersyn all night, and can’t say I blame you. She’s hot as hell. That’s who you need in your life. Not that succubus Laney. I don’t know what the hell you see in her…” Liam trails off when Rhys intentionally drops a bottle of water against his crotch to shut him up.

“Suck on that and stop your bitchin’, man.”

I don’t care what anyone has to say about Laney. What’s done is done.

For once, I don’t even want to think about it. Or her.

The limo is quiet for a few minutes, and Rhys moves to sit next to me.

“Didn’t enjoy the show?”

“Huh?” I ask, my mind reeling through the game of Twenty Questions.

“The strippers? You hung out with the bartender all night.”

“You know me, Rhys. Not big on partying. But yeah, Emersyn was cool.”

“So why are you going back to the resort to babysit this asshole?”

“Best man duties until his ass is safe and sound in his suite.”

Rhys shakes his head and hits the call button for the driver, instructing him to turn around.

“Rhys, it’s fine–”

He cuts me off with a curt wave in my direction.

“You gotta live, man. I could feel the energy around you two, hell everyone in the club could. You deserve some good. Take it.”

He's right–I never just live. And right now I want to do just that.

Five minutes later I’m climbing out of the limo. I approach the club just as security is about to lock the door.

“Excuse me!” I call out to grab his attention. He recognizes me instantly.

“Hey, we're closing up for the night.”

I nod. “Is Emersyn still here?”

He smirks and says, “She’s just about to head out. Tell her I’ve locked up. Make sure she gets to her car safely.”
