“Okay, we will take it from here. Thank you.” She turns towards another woman wearing the same type of clothing. “Please bring this gentleman to bay four,” the nurse shouts.

“Thank you for bringing him in. If you want to wait for him, the waiting room is just around the corner.” The nurse points to a doorway.

Dave smiles. “No, thank you. I need to get to work. He turns to me and says, “See you around, Alyx, I hope you get sorted. Sorry again for everything.”

With that, he turns and exits out the same door we just came through, leaving me alone in yet another place I am unfamiliar with. Wonderful.

The nurse escorts me to the bay they have assigned me, pulls back the curtain surrounding it, and helps me into the bed. She looks younger than most nurses I have seen.

She smiles at me.

“I’ll be right back; I’m just going to get the doctor,” she says sweetly.

She pulls the curtains closed completely around my bed and leaves the area.

About five minutes later, the nurse returns, followed by an older man with glasses and white hair. He’s wearing a long, white coat and carrying a clipboard. He must be the doctor she was talking about.

“Hello, sir, I’m Doctor Maddox. I hear you’ve been in quite the accident this afternoon. Let’s look at you.” he says, approaching me.

I look at him and then the nurse. I don’t know what they expect me to do now.

“First, I will ask you for your name and date of birth. Could you please tell me?” he says, reaching into his pocket for a pen.

I nod. That I can do. I can remember that.

“My name is Alyx Carter,” I whisper.

He notes it down onto his clipboard. He looks up at me, waiting for me to continue.

“My date of birth is 31st October 1929,” I state calmly.

The doctor stops writing on his clipboard and looks up at me. Why is he looking at me like I am crazy?

“What did you just say?” he asks, with shock on his face.

I look at him and repeat myself again, slightly irritated that I must repeat it.

“I said, 31st October 1929.”

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. My alarm clock buzzes to life. I groan and sleepily hit the snooze button. Five more minutes. I roll over to try and get another five minutes. Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. Shit! I jump awake and hit the snooze button.

“Holy shit, that’s loud!.” I groan, looking over and noticing the time is 7 a.m.

I better get up and get ready for work. I want to arrive on time on my second day. I pull back the covers and get up. I pull the cord to the light in my en-suite, and it fizzes to life. I have to remember to get a new bulb. This light is on its way out.

I walk over to the vanity and quickly brush my teeth. My breath smells rotten this morning.

A quick shower should help me wake up a little bit more and refresh me. I turn the handle, and the water spits out, struggling to come to life. I undress and get in. I quickly wash my hair and body, then switch off the water. Grabbing my towel from the radiator, I wrap it around myself and dry my feet on the bathmat.

I leave the bathroom and head to my dresser to pick out my work outfit. Black jeans, socks, underwear, and a white shirt. My apron from yesterday’s shift is still in my handbag. I grab my clothes, put them on, grab my towel, and dry my hair as best as possible. My hair is still damp, but that doesn’t matter. It will just be in a bun all day anyway.

I grab my hairbrush off the dresser and brush my hair, throwing it into a messy bun. I look around for my shoes and spot them by the bedroom door, exactly where I left them last night.

After putting on my boots, I glance at the clock on the side table: 7:30 a.m. I’ve got to leave, or else I’ll be late for work! I quickly grab my handbag off the door and walk out of my bedroom. I better grab a to-go breakfast. I head down the hallway and the stairs.

I make it to the bottom, and I’m about to turn and walk into the kitchen when I spot Amy making a cup of tea. Shit, she should still be asleep right now.
