He turns back to me and smiles, “I just need to take some blood from you, okay? It’s just a tiny needle that goes into your arm, and I can extract the blood. I need your medical background to see if you have any allergies.”

Oh great. I’m not that fond of needles.

The nurse comes back with a tray full of equipment. Fibreglass, plaster and bandages. I saw a needle and some thread there, too.

“Alyx, I need you to sit still now,” he says soothingly. “This is going to hurt like hell. Do you want any pain relief?”

Jesus. This is going to fucking hurt, but he better do it quick.

“No. I’ll be fine. Just do it quickly and get it over with, please?” I state, wincing.

The doctor looks at me and nods.

“Okay, on three. One…Two…”

He grabs the bone with one hand and my wrist with the other and pushes the bone back into my skin.

I scream in agony through gritted teeth. My entire body tenses with the pain. “That was only two!”

He chuckles, and before I know it, he has already finished stitching me back up and is now wiping away the excess blood. “Woah,” I whisper. That was quick! I didn’t even feel him stitch it shut! He then starts getting the cast materials and lathering my arm with it, followed by the bandages.

“That won’t take long to set now. How do you feel?” he asks while wrapping the last bit of cloth around my arm.

I look at him. “Better. It doesn’t hurt as much any more. The throbbing has stopped, at least.” I smile weakly.

The doctor smiles and walks over to a silver cart in the corner of the room. It’s filled with a bunch of medical equipment that I’ve never seen before. He pulls a vial of liquid from one of the drawers and turns back towards me. What is that? He gives me a small smile.

He grabs a small needle from the top shelf and approaches me.

“I’m just going to take some of your blood like we already discussed,” he says, seeing me staring at the needle in his hand. “But I need you to sit as still as possible.” He points at my arm. “Your wrist needs to stay in that position, okay?” I nod.

He sits next to the bed, and my heart starts beating faster. Just relax. It’s just a needle. It’s fine. He puts on a pair of black gloves, pulls up the sleeve on my other arm, wraps an elastic band around me, and taps my arm.

“Let’s find that juicy vein, now shall we?” he says.

As he said that, I could see my vein protruding to the surface of my arm. That was quick. Should it be that colour? As if the doctor had heard my thoughts, he looks confused.

“Why is your vein black? Have you taken anything you shouldn’t have? Do you take drugs?” he asks, puzzled.

“No. Nothing at all. Are you going to take the blood or not?” I recoil in defence. What does he think I am? A drug addict?

“Very well then,” he lets out a sigh.

He brings the needle to my skin, and it makes contact, but the needle doesn’t go in. Instead, it snaps off and goes flying across the room. Okay, that’s new.

“You have some thick skin, son.” The doctor chuckles nervously.

He tries again and again for the third time, but each time, the needle snaps.

“Okay, Alyx, I need to look you up in the system because, for some reason, I can’t get any blood from you. I’m quite concerned that the needle won’t go into your arm,” he says, pulling his gloves off.

He disappears again out of the bay. What system? I’m even more confused now than I was when I first arrived.

Ten minutes later, the curtain to the bay is pulled back, and Doctor Maddox returns, followed by another woman in a white coat. I look at her and spot the name tag on her jacket. Doctor Thomas. Great, another doctor.

“So, Alyx. I went to look at our system, and I couldn’t find anything about you. No relatives, nothing. It’s like you don’t exist or ever have. Do you know why?” he asks.

I look between both doctors. Okay, something is going on here. I don’t think it’s going to be good either.
