“I’m ok dad. A little shaken up, but I’m good,” I admit.

He steps aside and motions for me to go to my brother. Adam glances behind me. I knew he was looking for Grey.

“I told him to stay.” He fell in step beside me. “He wasn’t happy.”

“It’s probably for the best right now.” He places his hand on the door to an interview room. “You get uncomfortable or anything you can stop talking at any time.”

“Ok.” I nod.

I enter the room as two Denver detectives rise from the table.

“Ms. Harper.” One points to the chair across from him. “I’m Detective Caster, this is Detective Asher.” He points to the woman in the corner of the room. “This is Celine, our ASL interpreter.”

I wasn’t nervous until I sat down.

My stomach knots into a million tiny balls as I lift my hands. Detectives, Celine. I acknowledge.

“First of all, condolences on Mr. McKnight.” Detective Caster folds his hands. “You two are or were recently engaged?”

We were. I sign.

“We were," Celine voices.

“Your father had mentioned your recent parting. When was the last time you saw Mr. McKnight?” He asks.

Thursday evening. I sign.

“Thursday evening,” she repeats.

“Can you tell me what happened between you two?”

I lift my hands. I have only known Blaine for about three months. It was a whirlwind. It happened fast and after I had accepted his proposal, I realized we were rushing into it.

Celine translates to the detectives before I continue.

When I voiced my concern he got angry. He got violent, but apologized immediately. Emotions began to clog my throat as the memories were brought to the forefront of my mind. I decided to end things with him after he pushed me into a wall. We had dinner Thursday evening. I called off the engagement and he…

Celine passes along my words.

“Got angry?” Detective Asher asks.

Yes.

“I’m guessing he did that to your lip?” Caster offers.

I touch the spot with a frown and give a simple nod of my head.

“Where were you last night?” He asks.

I was at Officer Roy’s house.

“And what time did you leave?”

About eight thirty.

Celine kept translating each time I signed.

“Can anyone corroborate what time you got home?”
