I nod. “I understand.”

“I don’t think you do, brother.” He pauses. “They’re going to charge you.”

I clench my fists. “I was protecting her.”

Just like I promised.

“It doesn’t matter. What matters is what they can prove.” His eyes penetrate me with a pity I hate. “And right now, the evidence proves it was you.”

The door swings open yet again and a man I’ve never seen struts through the door. He’s wearing a business suit, an expensive one. He approaches the table, dropping a leather brief case down as he adjusts his cuff links.

“Don’t say another word to them.” He glances at Easton who glances at me.

“I’m sorry, who are you?” I ask.

He holds out his hand. “Jordan Carmichael. Your attorney.”

“I didn’t hire an attorney,” I counter.

“I did.” A voice comes from the door.

Jace stands in the frame. He and Jordan share a look before he speaks again. “He’s my brother.”

Chapter 50

Tilly

“This is ridiculous. I’m going down there.” My purse is on my shoulder and I’m storming towards the hall before anyone else can contest.

The anyone being Camille and Whitley. After the detectives showed up, I couldn’t even eat. Which in turn made me feel guilty dad had put all the work into making my favorite meal. He, Easton, Jace, and Adam left right after Greyson did. They went to the station to find out what’s going on. I’ve been a giant ball of anxiety for the last hour and a half, and I can’t handle it anymore.

“We’re coming too.” Whitley and Camille follow with the same amount of concern woven into their expressions.

A quick ten minute drive and we’re out of the car and entering the squad room. I immediately feel the hostility. Adam looks furious as he talks on the phone at his desk and Rex is trying to appease the two detectives from Denver.

I take a few steps towards my father’s office when Easton, Greyson, and a man I don’t know step out from an interview room.

His eyes meet mine and I move to go to him, but Camille catches me by the arm.

“You’re still being questioned Mr. Roy.”

Caster makes his way across the room, but the man in a suit steps in front of Greyson with all the arrogance of the entire NFL football teams combined.

“He’s cooperated and answered your questions. You can either charge him, or my client is free to go.” He switches the briefcase to his other hand. “From what I can tell everything you have is circumstantial.”

Asher pulls out his phone, holding it up to his ear as Caster and the man I’m assuming is Greyson’s attorney, banter back and forth.

“What are the fucking odds?” Whitley scoffs behind me, but I’m too caught up on what’s transpiring in front of me.

My father steps out of his office. Adam has now joined the commotion and all I want to do is run into Greyson’s arms. To make this all go away.

“Arrest him.” Asher hangs up the phone.

Caster pulls out a pair of cuffs and I can feel every nerve in my body pinch. Pain and agony rushing straight through my bones.

“Greyson Roy. You are under arrest for the murder of Blaine McKnight. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

The tears burst like a dam, and I sob out. My feet bring me closer, and my hands fly up. He didn’t do it. He was with me.
