And I caught him looking at me a lot.

We were all of two weeks into the season when he made it clear he wanted me as badly as I wanted him.

Then the fire jumped the road and started spreading. Our crew was working one end of the road, volunteers came up from the Keller's Ferry station to help out, hot shots were called in to take care of the steep canyon terrain that none of our local firefighters were trained for.

Mesa and I were working round the clock on staggered shifts and when we did have time off, we spent it trying to catch up on four days of wildland fire fighting with too much smoke and too little sleep.

So when the blaze was contained and we got word our work was done, I was excited about more than the world's longest shower-- I had a date with the hottest man in Moonshine Ridge.

"Morning, angel."

Warm lips press against the top of my head and I smile into my coffee cup, happy to have my thoughts interrupted.

"Let me help." I jump up before Mesa can argue and he lets me carry the steaming mug of black coffee he just poured to the table.

"You want anything else right now?" I ask, waiting while he sets the cane to the side and takes a seat where I left his coffee. "I can make toast? I think we have some of that jam you like."

"I want you to stop fussing over me and let me put my hands on my woman," he pats the flannel pajamas pants that cover his thighs and gives me that look that turns my insides to goo.

"I missed you last night, angel. Was I keeping you up again?"

"Not too bad."

It's weird sitting on his lap after all this time, and I'm still not comfortable putting my weight on his bad leg even though he keeps saying it doesn't hurt.

I remember screams that will always make that hard to believe.

"Sorry, babe."

He cranes his neck upward for another kiss that I'm more than happy to deliver, but then I hop up and head for the toaster.

Mesa

Robin's off my lap like lightning, busying herself making fucking toast when what I'd rather she was doing was crawling back in bed with me.

"Meadow texted earlier. She says they picked up your tux with Ozzie's, we just have to stop by their place to get it from them."

Watching my angel moving around the kitchen I've been microwaving leftovers in for years is one of my new favorite things. One of those dumb things that I never thought about any time I thought about what it'd be like to have a woman here, someone sharing my space and my future.

But here she is, all those curves wrapped in one of my old t-shirts that hangs down to her knees, with her thick, auburn hair pinned up in a messy bun and barefoot on the wood plank flooring, making my dick harder than those granite counter tops I custom ordered for the cabinets.

"I'll stop by and grab it when I go to the station later," I mutter, too distracted by the way my girl's braless tits jiggle and sway as she spreads butter and locally sourced, homemade black berry jam onto the wheat toast that just popped out of the toaster.

These last few days have been fucking killing me.

When I got the all-clear sign to come back home to Moonshine Ridge in time to watch my sister marry my dumb-ass buddy slash ex-buddy slash buddy-again-I-guess, I thought that was going to mean picking up where Robin and I left off before my injury put up a year-long cock-block.

Of course, things haven't been that simple: I'm still taking way more pain meds than I'd like and God knows I'm ready for the nightmares to piss off.

Robin hasn't spent an entire night next to me since we got home-- which means she's never spent an entire night beside me-- and I'm tired of waking up in the mornings to find her already down here with coffee made, staring out the windows like a zombie.

I want to wake up to her soft curves pressed against my throbbing dick so I can slip inside her and start our days off right. Not chase her out of bed because I'm talking in my sleep just to catch her down here lost in dark memories about why it started.

"You're going to the station later?" She asks, handing me a slice of the toast. "You want me to drive you?"

"Nah, I'm good," I promise. "Chief wants to meet up and talk about some stuff. He has a few ideas to get me back to work without putting me back on the line again. Why don't you stay home and take a nap while I'm not screaming in your ear?"

"You don't scream in my ear." She blushes a bit when she smiles and quickly finds something else in the kitchen to give her attention to.
