He turned to me then, smiling. “I think it really is.”

We studied each other for a long moment.

“Well, what do you say we get going? Maybe get something to eat?” he asked.

“I could use something to soak up all this wine,” I admitted.

Leo headed to the backroom to pay Julia and to let her know we’d be in the next day to pick up our masterpieces. And then we were off to the parking lot, chatting about where we would eat. I had a few places in mind that I hadn’t taken Leo to yet. I was getting ready to suggest my favorite place for fish and chips, but as we were approaching Leo’s yellow bug, he froze, staring at the second car in the parking lot. Leo’s whole demeanor changed as he stopped mid-sentence and took a step back.

“Oh no,” he said.

And I realized the last time he’d said that I’d ended up in quite the predicament.

Chapter Seventeen

Leo sighed. “I’ll just be a minute. I need to talk to him,” he said, gesturing to the red Ferrari parked next to us. “I’m sorry. I just can’t believe this.”

Mouth open, I assessed the situation. A man in sunglasses and a business suit got out of the car, shutting the door and slowly running to Leo. This couldn’t be good.

I got in Leo’s car, trying to be respectful. However, I was also trying to slow my breathing so I could eavesdrop on the conversation. The words flew back and forth, Leo sounding tense. The man also sounded quite perturbed. Still, after a few long moments, I watched them embrace. And then Leo got back in the car, started it up, and drove away.

I didn’t say anything for a beat or two, wanting to respect his privacy but also so curious. Finally, after a long pause, Leo began to explain.

“That was my agent.”

“Oh no. How did he track you down?” I asked, stunned.

“Jasper’s relentless and savvy. Plus, he has a lot of connections. I thought I covered my tracks pretty well, but I should’ve known.”

“So, what does that mean that he’s here?”

“Nothing,” he said. I could feel the icy wall up, though. It meant something.

“Why did he come the whole way here then?”

“He wanted to warn me about what’s going on back home, give me a heads up.”
