Because I don’t want a future without them in it. I feel like I've lost everything. A naïvety I didn’t realise I had is gone. My sister is gone. This love that I grew inside me is now gone. All that’s left of me is a broken shell. No home, no job, no future. Just memories of when life was better.

I let my feet slide out and lean up against the wall. I sob brokenly to the symphony of the stormy night and remember when I met a dying man and saved him.

My shadow, my stalker, the man I fell in love with, he never comes.

Grayson

Two weeks since she left, and I still can’t believe she’s gone. I can’t believe she’d do that. I didn’t think I could hurt like this. Dylan murmurs something in his sleep, and I curl around him, stroking a hand down his chest. My attempts to soothe us both fail miserably.

“Nyx,” Dylan whispers in his sleep. “Nyx.”

I close my eyes to the pain. When I open them, I find Silas staring at me from the other side.

“He’s not moving on,” Silas says.

“Neither am I.”

I close my eyes and then abruptly roll off the bed and pad out of the room. We’re back at my mansion in Silver Falls, having made the trip just after our guests left. I jump on the treadmill and start running.

He’s withdrawn and quiet. His dreams always end with him searching for her. When I ask him in the morning what he dreamed about, he always tells me he’s in the dark trying to find her, but she’s gone.

I run faster on the treadmill.

Falcon walks into the gym and closes the door behind him. He folds his arms over his chest and that stiff white shirt just pisses me off. Why does he have to look so perfect all the time?

“Spit it out or fuck off,” I snarl.

“She’s got a job now.”

“Great.”

“But she’s still staying in the shelter.”

I grunt and keep running.

“She’s not seeing anyone,” Falcon says and tilts his head to the side. “Sam has not talked, after he quit, he went to work for Darion, and no amount of money will get me an account of what happened.”

“I don’t care, Falcon. What the fuck?” I howl at him and jump off the treadmill. I pace back and forth, unable to contain the energy.

“Why are you so upset about this?” Falcon snaps coldly.

“I'm upset because she betrayed us.”

Falcons eyebrows raise. “So, Grayson. We’re not a hundred percent sure of that anymore, are we? Vienne made that slip of the tongue and let out that she and Silver had become friends. What if we’re wrong?” Falcon prods.

“If she was innocent, she would have said something,” I snarl and grab my towel, wiping the sweat off my face.

Falcon’s brows lower. “We didn’t let her say anything. We never gave her a chance.”

“She could have-” I stop and then sweep my drink bottle across the room. “I trusted her, and she betrayed me, she hurt me, she took everything-”

“Does this have something to do with your past?” Falcon interrupts.

I stiffen, but the words are a bucket of ice water down my spine. “Don't be fucking absurd.”

“Your nanny kidnapped you and your sister for two weeks and tortured you both. It was a huge betrayal. She was a beta, too, wasn’t she?” Falcon asks.
