Blinking the tears away rapidly, my attention shifts back to the computer screen. Missy’s family is large and encompasses more than just her pack, but it isn’t mine. I rub my temple, trying to dispel the near constant ache that exists there.

This was the right choice, I tell myself again. Silver is no longer a problem for them. Vienne won’t hurt them.

Dylan must have gone into his heat because the pack official withdrew for ten days four days ago. I abused Missy’s trust and reached into their secure networks to read the email Treyfield sent to Darion. It was a polite notification because Treyfield does use Raptore Security occasionally. I’m sure they know, but no one has said anything. The official bonding announcement will come out soon, and that will be that. I’ll be out of their lives.

One thing Vienne said was true. The tabloids were ruthless with reporting the ‘mysterious male omega dating Pack Treyfield’. Between that, the missing Donahue heir is all they seem to talk about.

I tried really hard not to feel destroyed over that. I am happy for them, but I’m devastated for me. They are a pack. No one can separate them now.

“Good. That was my plan all along,” I whisper. If I keep telling myself that, I’ll believe it one day.

The last hour of the day drags, but finally, it’s over. I head back to the apartment Darion had secured for me. It’s way too posh for me and far too big, but it’s nicer than anything I've ever lived in before, except, of course, the Treyfield Suite penthouse. I’m not sure anything could top that. But this at least looks loved and lived in. I push open the rusty gate and pause. There’s a woman standing on my painted porch with two men on either side.

She turns, and I suck in a startled breath.

“Alpha Waring,” I say respectfully because no one can forget her once they meet her. Scarlet Waring is beautiful, but more than that, she’s a rare female alpha who owned multi-million dollar companies and tamed the elusive Knight Pack. She’s also the woman who rescued me all those long nights ago when it all changed.

She smiles and turns even more, and I notice how incredibly pregnant she is. I jump forward, ignoring the growls of the alpha and omega, and unlock my door.

“Come in, sit down,” I say and usher her through.

She sits down on the lounge, right in the middle, and lets out a relieved sigh. “Thanks, Onyx. I have to admit, it’s getting awkward to, well, do anything.”

I hesitate with my back to her. She remembers me? Why is she even here? I turn around and take in the other alpha. He’s got auburn hair and a smile that I'm sure broke many hearts before he settled down.

“That’s Jet.” The omega says with a playful grin. “I’m Barren.”

“You’re Pack Knight,” I say reverently. There is a tremendous hit to my heart when I look at Barren. He’s nothing like Dylan. Barren is happier, friendly, and more open. But he’s a male omega, and apparently, that’s enough to make my ridiculous heart ache.

“Yep.”

There’s a tense silence where my frustration grows until I finally snap. “Why are you here?” I groan and turn away. “I didn’t mean that the way it came out. I'm sorry.”

Scarlet tilts her head to the side, watching me. I meet her eyes, and this time, I don’t look down or away.

“You’ve grown, little beta.”

I shrug. “Do you want a drink, something to eat?”

“No,” Scarlet says with a laugh but takes the hint anyway.

I tense and sit on the armchair. “Okay, let’s get straight into it then. Did Falcon send you? Or did Darion?” It’s the first time I’ve spoken Falcon’s name in weeks, and it hurts.

Scarlet’s smile falls away. “So much pain when you say his name. You love him.”

I flinch but straighten my shoulders, anyway. “That’s not relevant.”

Scarlet and Barren exchange a look that I don’t understand.

“Actually, it wasn’t anyone from Pack Raptore or Pack Treyfield. It was a very good friend of mine. Someone who saved me in this very room when I needed it.”

I blink at her. “This was your house?”

Scarlet smiles, but it’s soft now, sympathetic. “Onyx, this is my house. You didn’t think we’d let you fall, did you? You are destined for so much more than a shitty job in a café. Any one of our packs will gladly find you a place. And that includes Falcon. He has said to Taylor that you are to be given anything you desire. Money is no object. He still cares.”

I bite my lower lip to hold back the tears, but I can’t stop the arrow of pain into my chest. It rips open the wound and makes it hard to breathe. If he cares so much, where is he?

“The person who sent me to you was Hazel Waters.” Scarlet says at last when I don’t answer her.
