She looks at Dylan. “I can see it. You do you, boo.” She says and blows him a kiss. Then she just stands up and walks away.

I stare around, bewildered, until Dylan leans in close to my ear. “Eat.”

“Did she do that so I could eat?”

Dylan smiles slightly. “Eat. That was Hazel Waters, Gray’s younger sister.”

My mind is officially blown. I start eating my cold bacon and eggs while Dylan sits close enough to stop anyone interfering. It’s like we’re in our own little world. I just don’t know how the world is going to end. But breakfast never tasted so good.

The day passes as more and more people check in. I find myself either with Dylan or running errands and helping out the other staff. Before I know it, night has landed. I’m supposed to move into Dylan’s suite. It’s not expected of all guests, but some of the high enders have requested it. Simon found me an hour ago and let me know that I would be moving in with Dylan, no questions asked.

I hoist my backpack over my shoulder and close the door on the empty cabin. I take the long way back, slipping through the trees and avoiding the other staff. Preparing for an event like this is a massive undertaking, and tempers are frayed.

The resort is enormous, and I find myself near the gardens. None of us have been allowed inside them yet. They’re doing a big reveal in the final week, which looks like it will be incredible. Huge hedges keep nosy guests from seeing inside, and guards posted on the entrance keep them out.

I round the corner and stop.

Dylan is backed up against the hedges. He shakes his head. His jaw is tight and his eyes wide. The three alphas move in closer.

I don’t know what he’s so afraid of, but he’s afraid. I’m their employee. I could walk away and say I saw nothing. But I like him, and they gave him into my care. I’m moving before I can think things through.

I’m sorry, Silver, but it’s the right thing to do.

I slip between the spaces easily enough and stare up at them. They are terrifying. They look like monsters. Huge, towering alphas, men with all the power and no compassion in their expressions. It’s a repetitive nightmare, a situation I find myself in often in my line or work. One I’ve been lucky to escape. Powerful men taking and taking, and people like me, like him, we have no chance. I won’t let them destroy Dylan. I push my back against the omega and push at them. When they don’t move and someone growls, I react instinctively.

My palm crashes against someone’s face. My hearts pounding, and I’m suddenly covered in a cold sweat, but my act seems to freeze all four of us.

“You can’t do that to a guest!” I stutter shout at them.

Silas cradles his cheek with one hand, staring at me like I’m an alien.

“You can’t intimidate people into doing what you want. He’s scared, even I can smell his fear.” I snarl, and when Falcon moves, I step into his path and ball my fists. They can take me down easily, they can crush me. But I’m going to do everything I can to protect Dylan. “Don’t you touch him,” I snarl. “Don’t you dare.”

“You’re misunderstanding the situation, Miss Davies.” Falcon says coldly.

“Am I? Have you got an omega up against a wall, intimidating him despite his obvious fear, trying to force him to what?” I throw a look at Grayson, and then Silas. “Force him to bond with you?”

“No! Never force him to do that!” Grayson growls. “Just listen.”

“And how is that any better? You’re taking his choice, his autonomy, away from him.” I snap back.

“We just wanted to be able to talk, to explain.” Silas says softly and glances away. “But you’re right. We’re doing this all wrong.”

Falcon holds his ground, refusing to move for a long moment. “You don’t know the situation, Miss Davies. But, no matter. You’re correct. We’ll be more patient next time.”

“I’ve seen how alphas behave. I’ve seen how no can mean yes to them, and I’ve seen them leave ruins and wrecks behind like they’re nothing. Just because you’re stronger doesn’t mean you get to just take all the time. You have power and wealth and the designation, but be better!” I scream. I'm breathing so hard I'm almost sobbing.

Dylan’s hands are on my hips, holding me to him.

Falcon opens his mouth, but he can’t seem to get anything out.

Our eyes meet and hold, and I’m aware of the way my hair is sitting in a messy bun. My faded grey hoodie with the holes in the sleeves. I’m aware I haven’t slept properly in days, and I’m aware of the huge valley of differences between us.

He can have anything he wants in the world, anything. I don’t have that luxury. I don't even have a home to go back to.

He steps closer, but this time, his focus is on me, and it’s not anger in his eyes but curiosity. Falcon inhales and murmurs three words before he turns on his loafers and stalks away.

What on Earth did he mean when he said he loves coconut?
