“I know,” I say in exhaustion. Her request isn’t that much to ask, except for the fact that her standards are impossibly high. She won’t accept any of the packs that might court her here. Only the best for Silver Davies.

“I refuse.” Silver paces the space with growing agitation. I sit up and put my head in my hands. I'm too tired for this. If she gets too worked up, a tantrum will follow. I can’t deal with her shrieks this early.

“I understand that. I’m trying, Silvie.” My jaw cracks when I yawn, unable to hold it in anymore.

“Try harder.” Silver snaps.

I fall silent, the pain and weight of being responsible for everything crushing my soul. “I got a job. There's a cabin for you to stay in. It’s at the Silver Rocks Resort.”

Silver whips towards me. Her whole face lights up. “A resort? The Silver Rock, that’s Treyfield Pack’s resort. When are we going?”

I check the time on the brick I call my phone. “We have a couple of hours. Let’s pack up, get ready to leave, and go get something to eat.”

The rain pours down, instantly soaking my pants. The only thing I’m grateful for is that my pants are black, so maybe no one will know. Silver races ahead with the umbrella, laughing with a tinkling joy that is attracting too much attention. I can’t find it in me to stop her. She stands under the awning of the convenience store and raises her eyebrow before glancing at the door.

“We had breakfast.”

“I'm hungry, Onyx. Come on, I need to eat. I can’t be on a bus that long and be hungry.”

Her whine grates on my ears, and I push away that voice of reason in deference to keeping the peace. The street is filled with steam as the rain hits the hot concrete. I pause and spot my favourite person leaning against the alley wall. My heart jolts, and I smile despite the situation. I glance back, but Silver isn’t watching me. I take another long look at him.

He’s got a very compelling face with an angular bone structure that makes him look almost pretty. But right now, he’s frowning, his full lips turned down. I sneak into the convenience store and get two drinks and two rolls with chicken, cheese, and mayo. Silver will kill me, but it will be worth it.

Instead of coming out the front door, I go out the back and sneak into the alley. My stomach flutters as I approach him. I reach up and brush my wet hair out of my face. I should have tried to dry off. Fuck it. Why do I get so nervous around this guy?

“Hey,” I say and feel my cheeks burn. “So, I uh, I wanted to say thank you.”

He turns slowly in my direction like he can’t believe his ears. His eyes widen. “You’re here.”

I tip my head to the side and smile widely. “I am.”

He swallows hard and stands up off the wall. Beads of rainwater run down the side of his face, dripping from his wet hair. I’m suddenly stricken at the thought of never seeing him again. It just seems so unfathomable. I wish I could see what colour his eyes are. The dull grey of the day has turned everything a menacing hue, leaching the colour from around us, stealing this one last wish from me.

“I know we never exchanged names. It’s a thing, but I'm leaving town.”

“You’re leaving?”

Am I imagining the panic in his voice?

“Yes, I'm going to interview for a job to go work at Silver Rocks Resort for Treyfield pack. Lucked out with that one.”

His face twitches, and I inhale a strong, almost bitter scent of lemons.

“Treyfield Pack?” He murmurs. “Of course, they know.” He lets out a deep sound that could be a growl.

“Um, so, anyway, I don't have time. I just…well, you’ve been the only friendly face, and you keep saving me.”

“You saved me first.” He says bluntly.

I blink, my words vanishing. “No, I-”

“You fed me and told me where I could find a place to stay. You saved me first.”

“It was just a sandwich and some advice.” My cheeks burn.

“It saved my life.” He insists.

I peer up at him and shrug uncomfortably. “Here!” I shove a sandwich and drink into his hands.
