“I’m not playing a game, Dylan.”

He bumps my arm with his. “Liar.”

“Not lying.” I protest. Definitely lying.

Silas returns with our drinks. I take mine gingerly.

“You two should go get some rest before the dinner event begins.” Silas says. “Dressing will take some time.”

I consider that. “I’m good, I’ll just wear my uniform.”

“Uh, no. That’s not going to do.” Silas murmurs. Peering first at me and then at Dylan.

The omega straightens, and I can feel him getting ready to fight on my behalf. I have to do better at this. Causing fights isn’t going to find any happy endings.

“I don’t own a dress.” I say quickly and feel my cheeks burn. Sharing my truths after so long of being so secretive is hard.

“Oh.” Silas says. “Well, I can-“

“I’ll do it.” Dylan growls low and aggressively.

I glance between the two of them and take Dylan’s hand. “Sure, that sounds…well, having a tooth pulled actually sounds more appealing, but okay, you can dress me.”

Silas snorts a laugh and then smiles.

Oh, dear alpha, beta, and omega, the man is the most stunning sight I’ve seen in my life when he just smiles. Why the hell doesn’t he lead with that? It takes me a moment to recover my wits enough to turn away from him. My knees are weak, and my chest feels heavy. I have the strangest urge to giggle.

I clear my throat twice and then take Dylan’s arm. “Right, let’s go.”

The omega chuckles darkly, sending another unpleasant surge of awareness. I press my lips together and determine to ignore it.

The dinner goes off without a hitch. Incredible acts of musical talent and dancing skill stole my breath. The simple black gown hugged my body, even though I kept tugging the hemline down. It made me feel beautiful for two minutes until I saw Silver glittering in a pale blue gown. After that, I just took a mental step to the left, pretended that I was wearing my uniform, and effectively ignored it.

But now…there’s no ignoring the uncomfortable situation I’m in. I’m on the gold lift with the alphas and their omega. I don’t belong here, and our reflections show that loud and clear.

The door opens, and they wait until I get off before walking past me. I loiter close to the lift doors, suddenly very, very unhappy with my decision to move into the penthouse with the Treyfield Pack. What was I thinking? Every night since has been harder than the night before.

“I’ll walk you to your room.” Falcon says, breaking through my panic.

I abruptly turn and stalk after him. He leads me down a long corridor. I reach out and twist the handle before he can, almost slamming the door in his face.

All the bedrooms are on this side of the penthouse. Grayson has the room next to mine, but the other three bedrooms are further down the hallway.

The room is nice, dark with clean lines. The king-size bed feels too big for me, but I could worship the bathroom. I’ve been here four days, but there’s almost no sign that I'm here. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I pace as long as I can, trying to wait the pack out. They’ll go to sleep soon. There’s only so many times I can pace the confines of the room before thirst gets the better of me, though, and I end up creeping out when everything’s been silent for a half an hour.

I creep out and find the penthouse in semi-darkness. I don’t have to worry about the dress rising up my thighs like I did at dinner, and without those evil contraptions called shoes, I feel more like myself.

A quick search of the cupboards reveals glasses, and I drink some water before I return to my room. My pulse is jumping, and I startle in the dark. I feel like a thief at night, sneaking around where I don’t belong. I search for the lights, but I can’t find them, so I just approach my bed and lay down on it.

Instantly, I know something is wrong.

“Well, hello there, little beta.”

I let out a shriek and scramble off the bed, smashing into a wall that should not be there.

Grayson, because that’s the only alpha it could be, lets out a laugh and grabs my wrist, tugging me back onto the bed. He murmurs something and pale light erupts from a half sphere on the wall.
