There is no other answer, and we know it, I know it. But I surely wish there was one. I incline my head and damn the beta into hell with us.

“So, Dylan and I were thinking about skipping the dinner tonight.”

I look at her sharply and notice her wet hair and the employee clothing of a white shirt and black slacks, the uniform doesn’t sit right on her. “We can go over the reports here if you wish?”

She flicks me a smile, and I notice, possibly for the first time, that it’s sweet and, though crooked, quite beautiful.

Have I ever looked at her as anything other than a threat?

I replay every single interaction we’ve had and close my eyes as I realise that the poor thing is probably going to hate us forever.

“Alpha Hastings?” Onyx calls from the couch she’s perched on.

I jerk my head up, looking at her. “Call me Silas, please.”

She nods and indicates the spot on the couch beside her. I move quickly, taking the seat, and throw myself into my world as I try to ignore that mellow scent.

She cares about Dylan. She cares about my business and her work. Everything I assumed about her was wrong. I really have no idea who this woman is at all.

But maybe we have a chance to learn.

“Silas?”

I make a humming sound and look at her. Her cheeks turn pink, and I wonder what that’s for, but then she smiles slightly and points at the tablet.

“Now that we’re a few days in, some of these omegas and these packs have segregated from the main group. They appear to be after more refined activities.”

“Refined?”

“Reading groups, theoretical lectures. Political debates. Art showings, and the more…cultured activities.”

I peer down at her report. “Interesting. You said Hazel is one of these people?”

“Yes.”

“Hazel would know. Gray, can you get your sister up here?”

Grayson sits up. “You want Haze’s help? Do you know what can of worms you’ll be opening?”

“Is she still moping?” I ask.

Gray’s face falls into a dark shadow. Ever since her pack chose another omega, Grayson and Hazel haven’t been the same. She pretends and smiles, but he’s so protective of her. We all are.

“It will give her something to do.” I insist. “We can call it a trial.”

“I’ll see if she’s available.” Grayson says evenly, stands up, and disappears into the lift.

“Gray and Hazel…I still struggle with it.” Nyx whispers.

“You and me both. But they both have a stubborn streak a mile wide, and they’d do anything for the person they love, just like....” I trail off, aware that I’ve stopped talking about Gray and Hazel, and my mind has drifted to Dylan without my permission. I’m not sure how to continue speaking. He is in everything. He is my world, and being without him is agony. He invades me whenever my guard is down.

She licks her bottom lip, and I follow the movement. “That is a truly amazing thing. To care so much that you’d do that for someone because you love them.” Her eyes, that deep blue, almost grey, stare at me with so much understanding.

“Like you with your sister.” I say with false lightness.

Her face leeches of colour, and her shoulders roll in. “Not the same. I can only try my best, but I don’t often succeed in doing right by her.”

“She’s here. I didn’t get a chance to tell you how much I admired your composure when we first met. It must have been strange and frightening, and you just gave your sister this chance to better her circumstances. That is…incredibly selfless.”
