“Hey, hey. What’s this?” He sweeps his thumbs across my cheeks, swiping away my tears. “Did we hurt you? Scare you?”

I shake my head and laugh. My hands reach up and cover his. “It’s okay, I’m okay. I just needed to have a moment.”

“Oh, okay.” It’s clear that Grayson doesn’t understand my need for space, but he smiles. “Have you finished your moment?”

I laugh again. “I need to finish these bottles.”

Dylan elbows past Grayson and peers into the boxes. “What are we doing?”

“Checking them off against this list and putting them on the racks.”

Dylan starts helping, and then I notice Grayson opening another box. I move to help him and show him quickly what to do. By the time he’s settled, Dylan has finished with his box.

“So, this is…what is this?” Grayson asks when we get halfway through his box.

“Hard labour,” Dylan says with a smirk.

“It's just a task to do mindlessly to let my brain think,” I explain.

“Oh.” Gray scowls. It’s cute and almost petulant. “What did you need to think about? Us?”

“Kind of, yeah,” I say bluntly.

Grayson is obviously not expecting that answer. His fingers fumble, and he almost drops one of the bottles.

And now I have to elaborate. “I was thinking that you four are perfect together. Seamless. I don’t understand why you’re all fighting it. To have a pack, a family…there are so many people who don’t get those options. They don’t get happy endings. You should fight for your happiness.”

They are both frozen, staring at me. I'm lecturing them, berating them. Argh, what is wrong with me?

Gray glances at Dylan. He clears his throat and edges closer to me.

“We’re not taking this second chance for granted,” Dylan says softly.

My cheeks burn, and I turn away from him and start on the next box. “I’m glad. It will be good for you four to be together.”

Dylan grips my shoulders and stops my movements. “Would you-”

I tense, terrified of what he goes to ask.

“Dylan!”

We both turn around to find Silas in the doorway. He glances around and then clears his throat. “Come with me.”

“Silas, we’re kinda busy,” Dylan growls in frustration.

Silas meets my eyes and sees the plea there, and because the man has more empathy than is decent, he inclines his head minutely and turns to Dylan with a smile. “I really need your help. It won’t take long.”

Dylan hesitates and then removes his hands and walks to the door.

“I’m going to stay and learn this stock-take nonsense,” Gray says cheerily. He waves to Silas. Gray is okay for thirty seconds, and then he holds up the tablet. “I did something.”

I sigh heavily and take the tablet from him.

He bites his lower lip and winks at me.

“How can you create such amazing gardens and not understand the workings of your tablet?”

Grayson snorts. “I draw on paper or the desktop. I really don’t like phones or tablets.”
