“Is that okay?” Silas asks with a frown. “You looked panicked before.”

“Yes. It’s confusing, but it will be good to help you guys romance Dylan. I think you’re really winning.”

Silas scowls and prowls towards me. “Come with me.”

He grabs my wrist, ignoring my protests, and drags me through a door at the back of the room and up a narrow flight of stairs into a simple white room. It got the lightest dove grey carpet and huge vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams. He doesn’t stop until he drags me to a huge glass window.

“What do you see?” Silas whispers in my ear.

“I see a stunning landscape, your hotel gardens. It’s lovely.”

“I see a beautiful woman in my arms, a woman who fits with my pack the way we’ve cultivated our hotel to complement the landscape.”

His words take a moment to sink in.

“What are you saying, Silas?” The words strangle me.

“I’m saying that we’re enjoying being with you and maybe this date is about you, not Dylan.”

“Does he know?”

Silas chokes on a laugh and grips my hip, leaning in to whisper in my ear. “Oh, he insists.”

I exhale roughly.

His fingers ghost over my ribs, grazing the side of my breast. My skin breaks out in goosebumps. His hips press against my ass, and I feel the evidence of his arousal. People walk past the window, and I fight to control my facial expressions.

“We could make your entire world flip over and over.”

I pant. “I’m pretty sure you already have.”

Silas growls and drags his teeth over my ear. I shudder.

“You are a beautiful woman,” Silas says. “My omega can’t stop looking at you. It took me a while to see what he sees in you, but now that I can see it, I can’t look away. You glow with an inner fire.”

He steps back while his words echo in my head.

I whirl as he clasps his hands behind his back, the suit jacket pulling tight across his chest. His hair is swept back, not a lock out of place. He’s immaculate and so very hot. His lips quirk up, and his smile punches me in the gut.

“Let us spoil you for one night, Miss Davies. Allow us to show you our gratitude and express our interest.”

His words can be taken in two directions. The first sends my overactive heart into overdrive. The second is more like duty.

“Can I ask you something first?”

“Sure.”

“Why did you take all the birds to the vets? They’d already seen vets, they’re at rescues. Why didn’t you send someone else to do it?”

“Because Dylan deserves the best. I wanted to give those birds their best chance.”

“So best doesn’t necessarily mean healthiest to you?”

Silas cocks his head to the side. “There is a bird in that enclosure that can’t fly. He can only hop and climb. He is perfect in his own way and a favourite among the staff. What others might see as broken doesn’t actually mean they are broken, it just makes them different. I wasn’t trying to get Dylan healthy birds, I wasn’t choosing the best, prettiest, most aesthetically pleasing birds. I was taking the ones that no one wanted, that no one was looking at, that no one thought had value. Then I took care of what he loved, protected them, and then, Onyx, I gave them forever.”

I stare at him in wonder. “You see him, don’t you, Silas? He could hide in any shadows in any room, and you could find him.”

I reach out, lifting my hand to press my fingers to his jaw.
