Breathing in through my nose, my gaze focuses on my hands. I think I’m shaking. I've really gone too far this time, way too far.

Footsteps slowly approach, and my body tenses.

Falcon and Dylan come out at the same time and with each, I’m nearly bowled over by the physical and emotional reaction I have to them.

Dylan spots me and freezes. Our eyes lock. Shame curls through me like those damn smoke clouds on the pool’s surface.

“Nyx.” He growls, and then he’s beside me, pulling me into a hug, and I’m weak. I’m so weak. My horrible thoughts drag me into the depths of misery that I don’t understand. I curl my arms around him and hold on for dear life. I cling to the feelings that I suddenly recognise.

Dylan is someone I trust. He is someone I can respect. I won’t ruin his fairy tale. Nor will I steal his happiness. But maybe…

Silas comes out of his room and stops beside Falcon, resting his forehead on Falcon’s broad chest and his light grey shirt. I watch in stunned silence as Silas tilts his head back and the two kiss. It’s soft and intimate. There is no space between them. My throat is parched, and I can’t think at all.

“They look beautiful together.”

I don’t even realise I've said it out loud until Dylan growls in my ear. “They do.”

He breaks away from me, and I find Gray in front of me. He beams and puts a muffin in my hands. “Eat, Onyx. Falcon told me to feed you.”

I nibble at the muffin while I catalogue just how incredibly screwed I am. My feelings are real and intense. I’d been ignoring everything, so focused on the novel experience and doing my job that I’d neglected the one rule I had to remember.

The rule I imposed on myself when I came into this world. Don’t get swept away. This is not my life.

I think…I think I might have fallen for them. It’s like loving the sun, it's not possible, I’d burn up.

Suddenly, I’m seeing their penthouse with the blinders ripped away. The lavishness, the expense. I choke, my throat tight with panic as I scramble up. They live on a different planet from me. I slept on a couch that was owned by no less than five owners. My clothes came from thrift shops. I didn’t have a choice of food to eat. No one brought me artfully arranged plates to choose from. I mean, the cushions on the couch probably cost a month of my wages.

I wheeze. Panic rips up my throat, and it’s everywhere I look.

Gray follows me, his head cocked to the side. He can sense my struggle, and he’s trying to figure out how to fix it. I choke, unable get a single sound out. He looks me up and down and then nods to himself, but his eyes are kind.

“Me and Nyxie got something to do. Don’t wait up.” He blows the others a kiss, drops an impossibly heavy arm over my shoulders, and leads me to the lift.

He doesn’t speak, for which I’m grateful for. He doesn’t ask a single question, not even with his eyes. We get off on floor ten. He drags me through into the gym and pops me down on the floor with a heavy hand on my shoulder.

I peer up at him. “What am I doing here?”

“You’re going to watch me workout.”

I fold my arms over my chest and shrug. But inside, I’m melting because he’s pulling those grey pants down and revealing a tiny pair of black shorts. I snap my mouth closed and try but fail to not look at him. All those muscles, all that smooth skin. And is he flexing?

I lick my dry lips as he starts to run.

Music comes on the speakers, causing me to jump, and I swear he gets even bouncier. It's revolting. I’m so down for it. At some point, Dylan and Silas join us. Silas sits beside me while Dylan gets on a treadmill and starts running. And now I’m divided between the two of them.

Is it hot in here? I reach out and grab Silas’ hand. He laughs and pulls me up from my spot on the floor. “Shall we go and see what’s on the roster for today?”

“Sure.”

Silas pauses. “Oh, we need to meet the jet quickly.”

I frown but follow him as he leads me down to the foyer. A car is waiting for us. I slide into the back and sit quietly while Silas pulls out his phone and barks a set of instructions.

We drive for thirty minutes and then stop. I climb out and feel something shift inside me. A huge jet with Treyfield written on the side is sitting fat and silent on the tarmac. Silas walks towards it. I follow him up and step on the jet. If I thought the penthouse was luxurious, then I was mistaken.

This jet is a whole new level. Silas walks towards a man in a suit.

“Mr Anders.”
