It’s a perfect moment, one I commit to memory. It’s just too bad that panic deep inside me is reminding me that good things don’t happen to me, and as soon as I open my eyes, I’ll find this is all a dream and the fire is burning down my house.

Some days you wake up and the day is just the freaking day of all days that you wish you could kick to the curb. Today, the day has decided to send all the signs and portents into the universe that I do not belong with this pack. Starting with a dream where my father sat down and mocked me endlessly, telling me they’d see my true value and dump me soon enough. I can still hear his vicious words ringing in my head.

After the jet, Silas took me to the office, where he casually agreed to build a tennis court during a video conference with Simon. He didn’t ask the cost. He just said to use whatever funds it took to do it properly. I’d sat, feeling like a child, out of my element, as he went through several more emails and then smiled at me like it was all nothing. I was still reeling.

That was followed by Falcon ordering a steak, taking a single bite, and then getting a phone call and walking away from his food and not returning. I’d watched as his plate was removed and the food dumped into a bin. It made me feel sick and dizzy. I'm from a different world where food is not to be wasted.

Everywhere I look, their wealth is a slap in the face that just reminds me of where I came from. I never had a bed like the one they’ve given me. I’ve never eaten so well in my life. Suddenly, I feel like a guest who overstayed their welcome. Even the clothes are so far out of my realm of reality that I would never even try them on.

It’s hard to look them in the eyes. It’s hard to face the truth.

I spot Silver and wince as she struts towards the table. If anything, she looks even better now. Her hair is silkier, her clothes are more expensive. I wince at the bill she’s racking up, then remember that the pack is taking care of it.

Somehow, that’s worse.

Silver flounces to the table and sits between Silas and me, turning her back to me. I stare at her for a long moment. I get a flash of an image in my head of gripping her hair and ripping her off the chair, but in the end, I just lower my chin and turn back to the table.

“Silas, you’re looking so hot this evening,” Silver croons.

My eyebrows raise. I shoot her back a glare and pick up another mouthful of my pasta.

“So, I’ve been thinking. I’d love that private tour Falcon was going to take me on. Perhaps you could show me?”

“It wasn’t private. He was organising a group.” Silas says and sets his cutlery down.

I look up, drawn without my understanding, to see Dylan crossing the dining room floor. His glare lands on me and then Silver, and a flicker of rage passes over his features before he goes blank.

His gait smoothes out, his long legs eating up the distance between us. He rounds the table, dragging his fingers over the chairs, and then grabs Silas’ chair and jerks both the alpha and the chair away from the table.

Silver snarls, but Dylan snarls back louder. He straddles Silas’ lap and leans in to kiss him so deeply that I feel myself get wet just watching.

My sister lets out a sound of deep rage and stands up. She barely looks at me as she whirls away, stalking over to Pack Leeway. The alphas barely acknowledge her, but when they do look at her, their expressions are hostile. Silver doesn’t notice, but I do.

I make a mental note to ask Moira for any gossip. What the hell has Silver done to make not one but two packs that angry at her?

Dylan grabs me and leans towards me. I grab his wrist, squeezing hard enough to make him stop.

“Not here,” I say tightly.

He studies me, his eyes flicking between mine. There’s a guarded look that makes my stomach drop out. “Are you ashamed?”

“Not of you,” I whisper back.

His lips press into a line. “Are you ashamed of him?”

I glance at Silas and shake my head.

“So, you think you’re not good enough to be kissed?”

I hiss.

He pulls me towards him. “Tell me to stop, then. If you really don’t want me, tell me you don’t want me.”

I let out a low growl but melt towards him as his lips collide with mine. I get so heated, so lost in the kiss, that I forget where I am.
