Negal froze.

Did she know about his contribution to Karen's transition into immortality?

It was supposed to be a secret. Karen and Gilbert had asked him to supply his venom to aid in her transition, which was an uncommon thing for a bonded couple to even consider, let alone request. The venom bite was a very intimate act with strong sexual connotations, and Gilbert, who was a newly transitioned immortal, was even more possessive of his mate than he had been before that. But desperate times called for desperate measures, and Negal's godly abilities had been greatly beneficial to the successful completion of the procedure. Still, it wasn't something the couple wished to become fodder for clan gossip.

How had Frankie found out about it?

"What's the matter?" She tilted her head. "You look like you forgot something."

He shook his head. "I didn't. I just don't want to take Dagor's seat."

"It's fine." His friend clapped him on the back. "Sit down and chat with Frankie while I get us coffee. Gertrude doesn't mind as long as I bring her a cup as well."

So that was the nurse's name. Perhaps on his way out, Negal could flirt with her and make arrangements for tonight. The cruise was half over, and after that, there would be no more lovely immortal females vying for his attention.

His team was heading to Tibet to search for the missing Kra-ell pods, and it might be a long time before he found a suitable female to spend a few hours of pleasure with.

Negal wasn't looking forward to it, but he had a duty to perform.

He sat down on the chair and steepled his fingers over his knees for the simple reason that he didn't know what to do with them.

Frankie regarded him with a knowing smile. "You still haven't told me what you've been up to lately, and I don't mean the mission you've just come back from." She grimaced. "As glad as I am that those bad guys were dealt with, I don't want to hear the gruesome details. I'm much more interested in your love life."

He frowned. "What did you hear?"

She chuckled. "That you're very popular with the clan ladies."

Negal let out a breath. Maybe she didn't know about Karen after all and was just fishing.

"Indeed. I'm the only available bachelor on this cruise, so of course I'm popular. I could have warts all over my face and still get more attention than I could ever hope for."

"But you don't have warts. You are a god, and you are absolutely perfect." Frankie pulled out her phone. "Do you mind if I take a picture of you?"

"Why do you want to?"

"I want to show it to my friend Margo." She turned on her side and leaned closer to him. "I'm not supposed to take pictures of anyone on the ship, but we are inside a clinic that has no windows and looks like any other medical facility out there. No one will be able to recognize it, so I hope that whoever is monitoring outgoing calls, texts, and emails will let this one slide."

He really didn't want Frankie to show his picture to her friend and get her hopes up for nothing because he wasn't interested.

Wincing, Negal shifted on the uncomfortable chair. "Are you trying to play matchmaker?"

She rolled her eyes. "Obviously. Mia, Margo, and I are best friends, and two of us are mated to gods. It's only fair that Margo mates a god as well, and you are the only one left."

Negal groaned. "I don't want a mate. I'm perfectly happy being a bachelor and enjoying the attention of the single clan ladies." He leaned closer to Frankie, so they were almost touching noses. "Who are immortal and have the stamina to match. With all due respect to your friend, I don't want to waste the last days of the cruise on a human."

Frankie recoiled as if he had insulted her mother. "You are such a bigot, Negal. I was human until this morning, and yet Dagor chose me. Margo is beautiful, smart, and has the heart of a tiger." She leaned away from him and started scrolling on her phone. "Here. Take a look." She shoved the phone in his face.

Not wanting to antagonize her further, Negal took the phone and looked at the photo of a pretty blond human. She might be beautiful by human standards, but she was quite ordinary when compared to goddesses or even immortal females. That being said, there was a fierceness in her eyes that spoke to him. "I see what you mean by her having the heart of a tiger." He handed Frankie the phone back. "She looks formidable."

Frankie frowned. "That's it? That's all you have to say about her?"

"What did you expect me to say? That I fell in love with her at first sight?"

"Well, yeah." Frankie pouted. "I heard one of the immortals talking about falling in love with the picture of his mate before ever meeting her." She sighed. "Well, that was disappointing. Perhaps I should show Margo's picture to Max." She looked at him with a slight smirk, lifting one corner of her lips. "Perhaps he will react like I hoped you would."

"Max is an excellent choice for your friend." Negal pushed to his feet and dipped his head. "I wish you an easy and successful transition." He turned to leave.

"Wait. What about that picture?"
