Scrolling through his contact list, he found Sylvia's number and placed the call. The first attempt went to voicemail, but he called again, and this time she picked up.

"What?" Sylvia barked, probably without looking at the caller ID.

Or so Kian hoped. He wasn't big on protocol, and he didn't expect deference from his people, but he expected basic courtesy.

"Good morning, Sylvia. This is Kian. I apologize for the wake-up call, but we need your services, and the teams are heading out shortly."

"To rescue Margo?"

"Yes. I'm glad that you know what this is about. The guys can fill you in on the plan on the way, but the gist of it is that we need your special talent for disabling surveillance equipment. It's a dangerous mission, but I will make sure that you are protected. Still, you are a civilian, and you are not obligated to go. If you'd rather not take the risk, we will come up with another plan."

"Of course, I'll go. When and where?"

He chuckled. "I was hoping that would be your response. Half an hour on the promenade deck. Dress like a hiker. You know the drill."

"Someone better bring me coffee," she grumbled.

"I'll prepare a thermos." Roni rose to his feet. "Tell her that I'm on my way."

"I heard that," Sylvia said. "He'd better make it fast."

"Thank you, Sylvia. I appreciate it."

"Yeah, yeah. I need to get ready." She ended the call.

Roni winced. "I told you that she's grumpy in the mornings."

"That's okay." Kian pushed away from the table and walked over to the kitchenette. "I'm grateful for her help, so I would have forgiven her even if she had cussed me out."

"It was a close call." Roni closed his laptop. "I'm going to leave it here and come back after I say goodbye to Sylvia."

Kian nodded. "I'll join you on the promenade in half an hour. I hope that by then, Andrew will have information for me."

NEGAL

"Here we go again." Dagor wiped the spray of ocean water from his face.

The lifeboat was going as fast as a speedboat which made the ride bumpy, but Negal didn't mind. The faster they made it to Modana's estate, the faster they would get to Margo.

Naturally, they couldn't go straight to his private bay and just dock there. They needed to land a couple of miles away and make the rest of the way on foot. The clan's techno disruptor was with them, and hopefully, she could disable the surveillance cameras around the cartel boss's compound.

Negal had never heard of an innate talent like Sylvia's, and he was wondering how it came to be. If it was unknown on Anumati, then the gods hadn't coded their genetics for it. It was either a fluke of nature, or she was the descendant of a god who had been given experimental genes.

He and his teammates were tasked with keeping her safe, and Negal had given Roni his word that he would personally ensure her safety.

He didn't like the idea of putting Roni's mate in danger, and he'd even told Turner that they could get a helicopter elsewhere, but Turner rebuffed him by explaining that taking the cartel boss's helicopter was just one objective of the mission and that the others were no less important. Negal had argued that the two objectives didn't have to be achieved simultaneously, but then Turner's winning argument had been that it would take too long to get another helicopter, reminding Negal that they couldn't waste time.

For all they knew, Margo was being subjected to terrible torment and degradation on the yacht, and Negal couldn't think about that without his vision turning red and his fangs punching over his lower lip.

The fastest route to freeing her was getting Modana's helicopter and flying it to the yacht. Negal would have been content to leave the rest of the plan to Kalugal and the Guardians and rushed to save Margo, but he needed Kalugal to do his thing first for the rest of the plan to work. He also needed the clan's helicopter pilot because neither he nor his teammates knew how to operate one.

"I'm surprised that you were willing to leave Frankie," Aru said to Dagor. "That must have been a difficult decision to leave her alone in the clinic during her transition."

Dagor snorted. "Are you kidding me? Frankie commanded me to go and save her friend. On my part, I know that she has Mia and Toven to keep her company, and she's doing great, so I'm not worried. Bridget said that she's not likely to take a turn for the worse."

"Interesting." Aru smiled. "Gabi wasn't happy about me leaving, and she tried to convince me to stay. I guess Frankie cares a lot about Margo."
