Now, she was trapped at the mercy of a ruthless cartel boss, and escape was a fantasy. She and Jasmine were prisoners in this floating palace, and every moment brought them closer to their terrible fate.

NEGAL

Negal handed his backpack to Aru, bent down, and tapped his shoulder. "Come on, Sylvia. Hop onto my back."

"No." She put her hands on her hips. "I can walk."

She and her hacker were a match made by the Fates. She was just as stubborn and contrary as Roni was.

"We can move faster if you ride on my back, and if you are not preoccupied with where your next step should go, you will pay more attention to your surroundings and locate the damn surveillance cameras."

So far, they hadn't encountered any, and Negal was starting to worry that they were missing them. They were less than a mile away from the cartel boss's compound, going through rough terrain that was so steep that the immortals were having difficulty traversing it without injury.

Perhaps that was the reason for the lack of cameras. The cartel boss didn't think anyone would come at him from this side of the estate.

"Fine," Sylvia relented. "But if Roni gets mad at us for getting too close for comfort, I'll point my finger at you."

Negal suppressed an eye roll. "You are a mated female who is faithful to her mate. You smell like Roni, and that's very unattractive to me. I'll have to keep my nose closed the entire time I'm carrying you."

"Then I won't do it." She shrugged and kept going, stumbling and twisting her ankle. "Ouch. Damn it."

"Please, Sylvia," Kalugal said. "If you don't take Negal's offer willingly, I'll have to compel you to take it. You are slowing us down."

"You should be thankful that I'm here," she muttered under her breath as she put her hand on Negal's shoulder. "Crouch lower. I'm injured now. And don't you dare say that you told me so."

"I'm saying nothing." He put his arm under her butt and hoisted her over his back. "Wrap your legs around my middle and hold on like a monkey."

"Great visuals you are giving me," she murmured.

They kept going for another hundred feet or so when her arms tightened around his neck. "Slow down. I see a camera." She lifted a hand and pointed at something high up in the tree, but he couldn't see anything.

"What are you pointing at?"

"It's right there, but don't worry. I've already taken care of it. Keep going."

He did as she said. "How did you see it up there?"

"I sensed it, so I looked for it."

"I didn't know you could do that," Kalugal said. "What does it feel like?"

She chuckled. "Like what you would expect it to feel if you could. It's like a buzz of electricity. When there is a lot of tech around, it's more difficult to isolate the cameras, but there is nothing here, so it's easy."

"We should stop and put our Kevlar vests on," Dalhu said.

"Yeah, good idea." Negal let Sylvia slide down his back. "Especially you, young lady."

She tilted her head. "Are gods bulletproof?"

"Almost," Dagor said. "Our bodies expel bullets so fast that you could say so. That's why we are not putting them on." He waved at Kalugal and Dalhu. "You two, on the other hand, should wear them. The heart and the head should be protected."

"We don't have helmets," Dalhu pointed out. "The vests will have to do."

After the immortals got their vests on, Sylvia hopped onto Negal's back, and the six of them continued at a much slower pace.

"There are not many of them," Sylvia said. "That's just the second one so far."
