What the hell was she going to wear?

The more important question was, what the hell was she doing getting involved with an immortal?

She might enjoy a few blissful days with Peter, pretending to be a modern-day Cinderella, but unlike the fairytale, there was no fairy godmother to conjure a beautiful dress for her, and no happy ending after the magic expired at the proverbial midnight. When the cruise ended, it was back to cleaning rooms in Safe Haven.

Marina sighed.

Then again, this might be her only opportunity to experience life on the other side. The life of a human was short and mostly miserable, so she should enjoy whatever crumbs of happiness she could find, and Peter was a pretty tasty crumb.

A smile tugged at her lips at the memory of the night they had spent together and how perfect it had been between them.

It had been so good that even though they'd made love again this morning, she'd been so charged up with arousal that she'd played with herself in the shower before leaving her cabin for the lunch shift.

If only Peter were human, she would have thought herself the luckiest woman. But that was a silly thought because she wouldn't have approached him if he were just a regular guy.

Her plan had been to seduce an immortal who would be so infatuated with her that he would invite her to live with him in the immortals' village.

Peter was supposed to be her ticket out of the drudgery of Safe Haven.

The joke was on her, though. Despite her initial manipulative intentions, she found herself genuinely drawn to him, and it wasn't just about the mind-blowing sex, although she had to admit that was a large chunk of it.

Peter was the perfect lover who knew precisely how to bring her to the heights of passion, and he was also kind and attentive, stirring emotions in her she hadn't expected to feel again.

A small thing like his appreciation of the simple lunch she'd packed for him had been so genuine and surprising. Marina would have never expected an immortal to treat it as though it was some grand gesture. Her former Kra-ell masters wouldn't have even thanked her, and Nicolai would have taken it for granted as well.

Hell, she could have cooked a five-course meal for him, and he would have thought nothing of it.

Why was she even thinking about him?

One day with Peter should have been enough to wipe away the memory of her old boyfriend for good.

Marina sighed.

She shouldn't get attached to the immortal. As wonderful as being with him was, it wasn't going to last. Even if he was entertaining the thought of keeping her, she could just imagine what his friends and family would think when he brought 'the help' as his date for the wedding.

As she entered her cabin, she found her roommate lying on her belly, her chin propped on her fist and a book open in front of her.

Larisa looked up at her and smirked. "Where have you been? Cavorting with your new immortal boyfriend?"

Larisa had a sharp tongue, but she didn't mean anything by it. They all had a history of dealing with powerful aliens, and a lot of it hadn't been good.

"Not since this morning. Did you happen to bring anything nice to wear? Peter's invited me to accompany him to the wedding tonight."

Larisa flopped to her side. "He did what?"

"You heard me. But unless I can find something to wear that will make me look like I belong, I won't go."

Larisa snorted. "You could be wearing a designer gown, and you still wouldn't fit in. You are human, and you are a servant."

Marina sat on the bed. "Being a servant is a job, not who I am. And I won't be the only human in there. There are several of them who live with the immortals, and they brought two human women aboard earlier."

Larisa shrugged. "I don't have anything nice." She turned back on her belly. "We came here to work, not to party."

"Do you mind if I take a look at your closet?"

"Go ahead." Larisa waved a hand without looking at her. "But you won't find anything. You might want to check with Mila. Maybe she has something."

Mila liked to wear dresses, but she was also three sizes bigger than Marina, and there was no time to make alterations. Besides, Mila's simple dresses were not suitable for a wedding.
