The Guardians were held in high regard by these immortals, and she'd heard that they trained for decades before being accepted as full-fledged members of the force.

Marina still needed to shower, do her hair, and apply makeup before going to Peter's cabin, but first she needed to grab a Coke from the staff lounge to soothe the churning in her stomach.

Whenever she was stressed or anxious, her tummy would respond with unpleasant symptoms, and she'd found out that Coke worked wonders to calm things down.

She managed to type a message to Peter using the tiny keys on her phone, telling him that she needed at least an hour before she could come to his cabin.

He replied right away. Be here in an hour, or I'm coming to get you.

She had no doubt that he would, and her bottom tingled pleasantly as she thought about the way he would punish her if she didn't show up on time.

Returning her phone to the back pocket of her jeans, Marina chuckled at her own silliness and walked into the lounge.

With most of the staff busy preparing the feast for tonight, the place was mostly empty, and it was hard to miss the beautiful dark-haired woman she hadn't seen before sitting at one of the tables and playing a card game by herself.

Feeling Marina's gaze on her, the woman lifted her head and cast her a dazzling smile. "Hi, I'm Jasmine."

She must be one of the two women who had been rescued from the cartel boss's yacht. Marina didn't know their names, only that one was a friend of the human who'd gotten injured during the previous rescue mission.

"Hi." Marina walked over to her and offered her hand. "I'm Marina."

"Nice to meet you." The brunette tilted her head. "Can I interest you in a game of cards? Almost everyone has left to prepare the wedding dinner, and those two don't speak a word of English." She gestured at the two men sitting on the couch and watching a movie with subtitles.

"I wish I could, but I'll have to take a rain check."

Jasmine's face fell. "I see. Are you also working tonight?"

Marina shook her head. "Actually, I'm accompanying one of the guests as his date."

She didn't want Jasmine to think that she was providing escort services, but she was very limited in what she could tell her. The compulsion prevented her from saying anything about immortals or Kra-ell to any human, and Jasmine was very obviously not an immortal despite her striking looks.

"That's great." The woman pouted. "I envy you. I'm not allowed on the upper decks, and I'm dying of curiosity about those weddings. The couples must be famous people who don't want anyone to find out that they met via the Perfect Match service."

Marina had no idea what Jasmine was talking about. "I can't tell you anything. All the staff is sworn to secrecy."

Jasmine nodded. "My friend Margo told me that they had her sign an iron-clad nondisclosure agreement. Did you have to sign one as well?"

Marina nodded even though she didn't know what that was. It sounded like keeping secrets, though. "I wish I could stay and chat, but I just came to grab a Coke. I need to get ready."

"Do you need help? I'm great with makeup and hair. I'm an actress, so I know all the professional tricks."

That was an offer Marina couldn't refuse. "I would love that. Are you sure you want to do it, though?"

It was a kind offer, but the woman had just met her.

"Of course." Jasmine pushed to her feet. "I'm bored, and I love giving makeovers. Get your Coke, and let's go to my cabin. My suitcase has just been delivered, and I have all my equipment with me." She looked Marina over. "What color dress are you going to wear?"

"I don't know," Marina admitted. "I didn't bring any evening wear with me because I only expected to work, but my date for tonight borrowed several dresses from his relatives for me to choose from."

Jasmine's eyes brightened, and Marina noticed that she had golden flakes surrounding her pupils that started to swirl. "I have something that will look stunning on you. It will match your blue hair beautifully."

Marina was still mesmerized by Jasmine's eyes. "Do you know that you have swirling golden flakes in your eyes?"

Jasmine winced as if it was an insult. "It's a condition. It's loose pigment."

"Is it dangerous?"

"It could be if the pigment clogs my tear ducts, but I have it under control."
