Before the ceremony, Negal had accused Margo of being the reason his plans with Gertrude had fallen apart, and at the time, she hadn't known what he could have possibly meant by that, but now she knew whose fault it was.

"Did Frankie say anything to you?" she asked as he led her to the dance floor.

"About what?" He placed his right hand on her back, just below her shoulder blades, and took her right hand in his, holding it out to the side.

She put her left hand on his shoulder. "About entertaining me tonight."

"Of course not."

"Then why aren't you with Gertrude?"

"I told you. We are not together. She changed her mind about accompanying me."

Margo shook her head. "You said that it was because of me, but since I didn't even talk to Gertrude, I couldn't have been the reason she changed her mind. Did Frankie say something to her?"

Negal winced. "I wouldn't know what the nurse and her patient discuss, but I can assure you that it wasn't Frankie's fault."

"Then whose was it? Because it sure wasn't mine."

NEGAL

Negal didn't know how to answer that without revealing the confusion that had taken root in his mind, so he decided to go on the offensive instead.

"What about you and Max? He escorted you into the dining hall, but he didn't join you at your table or invite you to his. Did something happen to change his mind or yours?"

Margo smirked. "I'll answer your question if you answer mine."

As the waltz ended, an upbeat piece started playing, and the couples around them switched into free-style dancing, which Negal wasn't a great fan of. "Would you like to step out onto the terrace for some fresh air?" he asked her.

"Sure, if it will get me the answers I want."

Now that Margo's personality was no longer muted by the drug, the strength of it was coming through, and it had done nothing to diminish his attraction to her. On the contrary, it only added fuel to it.

He loved females who challenged him.

Nodding, he took her hand and weaved between the dancing couples to cross the dance floor to the other side of the event hall and the doors leading to the terrace.

As soon as he stepped outside, he was hit by the humid air, but the temperature was pleasant, not too hot or too cold. Then again, he wasn't as sensitive to changes in temperature as humans were, and he was wearing a jacket while Margo's arms and shoulders were exposed.

Shrugging his jacket off, he offered it to her.

She looked at him with puzzlement in her eyes. "Do you want me to hold it for you?"

"Aren't you cold?"

"Why would I be?"

She had an annoying tendency to answer a question with another question, but since he was guilty of doing the same, he couldn't complain about it.

"My body is better equipped at regulating temperature than yours, and I'm covered with clothing while you are exposed, so I thought that it might be a little chilly for you." His gaze traveled to the sheer side panels of the corset top of her dress. It was beautiful, but it didn't provide protection from the elements.

"Thank you, but I'm fine." She crossed her arms over her chest. "So, about Gertrude. Tell me what happened."

He slung the jacket over his arm. "It's really not something I should say because it is between me and her."

Margo shook her head. "Not good enough, Negal. You said that it was my fault, and I need to know in what way."
