"It's average," the doctor said. "But on the faster side of the scale."

A grin spread over Frankie's face. "Yay. I'm better than average."

"You are the best." Dagor kissed her cheek.

Margo hugged Frankie tightly. "Congratulations on turning immortal. I still can't believe any of this is happening even though I just saw it with my own two eyes."

Frankie patted Margo's back. "I hope to be witnessing your positive test results soon."

Her friend's cheeks reddened, and she cast a quick look at Negal, who was being a sport about it and pretending he hadn't heard.

He really was a great guy, and Frankie was holding her proverbial fingers crossed for the two of them to prove her right and end up together as fated mates.

GILBERT

"I'll leave you two alone to get settled." Bridget pointed at the hospital gown folded on the bed. "Put it on and call me when you are ready."

"Okay." Karen didn't argue.

They'd had to wait in the recovery room for the bed in the clinic to become available, but thankfully, Karen hadn't lost consciousness. Her fever was rising, though, and Gilbert's stomach was churning with worry.

"What if I'm not transitioning, and this is just the flu or a cold?" Karen asked. "The human staff and the rescued women could have brought viruses aboard."

Bridget grimaced like she'd heard the same rebuttal too many times and was tired of it. "Even if I could test for antibodies, it wouldn't tell me whether this is a virus or the transition because the body reacts the same way to both. It takes time until it recognizes that the change is not a malicious invasion. Bottom line, I need you monitored, and if you pass out, I will need to put a catheter and an IV in. So, I need you to put on the gown."

"I get it." Karen sighed. "I'm sorry about ruining your vacation. First, it was Frankie and all those poor women, and now it's me."

Bridget shrugged. "I love welcoming Dormants into immortality, and I love what I do." She smiled. "For a long time, I thought that running the administration of the rescue missions would be more fulfilling than working as a physician, and I transferred a lot of my duties to my son, but I missed it too much. So, I made a deal with Julian. He helps me with the rescue missions, and I get to spend more time in the clinic doing what I love most, which is taking care of patients."

When the doctor stepped out of the room and closed the door, Gilbert turned to Karen. "Do you need help undressing?"

She nodded. "I hate feeling sick and weak. My limbs feel as if they are filled with lead."

Gilbert put his hands on her waist and hoisted her on the bed. "They are as beautiful and sexy as ever." He crouched at her feet and removed her shoes.

Karen chuckled. "You know one of the things I'm looking forward to the most after my transition?"

He arched a brow. "Incredible stamina?"

"Well, that too. But I'm excited about not having to shave my legs ever again. Kaia told me that all her body hair just fell off after her transition, what little she had. With her blond hair, it was barely visible."

"You could have gotten it laser removed." He leaned up and lifted her up a little to tug her leggings off.

"It was too time-consuming. I didn't have time for multiple visits to the place."

As he removed her shirt, her bra, and her underwear, it was a struggle not to cop a feel, but he forced himself to behave and helped her into the hospital gown.

Karen lay down and sighed. "I'm exhausted just from walking here from the recovery room. What was it, less than twenty feet?"

"More or less." He covered her with the blanket. "Do you want me to raise the back of the bed?"

"Yes, please." She waited until the back was at about forty-five degrees. "That's good."

"Great. Should I call the doctor in?"

Karen nodded. "Can you check with Kaia and Cheryl that the little ones are okay?"
