An unfamiliar voice cuts in. “You’re going to force a bond with her?”
Footfalls draw closer, and Inchel’s voice sounds right next to me. “If it takes, she will be my consort and my way into the Mountain clan.” A hand strokes down my arm, and I scream in my head. “I’m going to bring the clan back into the fold. They have too much freedom in their fortress.”
The guard’s voice wavers. “But they’ve always kept to themselves. Why?—?”
A smack rings around the room we’re in, and the guard stumbles back from Inchel’s strike. By the echoes, I can tell this room is not very large.
Inchel’s voice lowers with anger. “I’m not paying you to ask questions. I’m paying you to do a job. Give me the room.”
It’s silent for a moment, but neither man argues, and their footsteps carry them from the room, the door clicking shut behind them.
No. No. Don’t leave me alone in here with him!
A shuffling noise brings Inchel’s scent closer. His whispered words drill through my ears. “I’m going to kill Kemremir. You would be wise to submit to me once I’m King … for the sake of your clan.”
Does he suspect I’m awake?
His lips press to my cheek, and his hand rests on my stomach, his fingers stroking lightly over the fabric of my shirt. The urge to sink my claws into his eyes trembles through my body to the point I’m surprised he doesn’t feel it. But the drug holds me immobile.
He whispers again, “Hopefully, some of this is getting through.” His lips brush the edge of my ear. “You are the reason I Challenged your Mate. I’ve been waiting years for my chance. I smelled his desire for you that day in the solarium. It’s been a long time since the King lusted after anything. I know I can’t win against him by strength alone, so I’ve waited. I’ve watched. All I needed was to find something or someone he loved”—his hand slides down my stomach and over my hip until his fingers grip my inner thigh—“and squeeze.”
The screams in my head get louder as Inchel’s fingers creep farther up between my thighs. “The King will do anything for you. Kemremir will die to save you. Once the bond is broken, I’m going to claim you, beautiful Tatha”—Slimy wet heat slides up the shell of my ear as he licks me—“whether you want it or not.”
My throat burns with disgusted rage as his fingers brush against pussy over my pants. His touch lingers before his hand climbs, slipping the hem of my shirt out of the way. I want to punch my claws through his chest and rip his heart out. His lips trail down my neck and over my collarbone as his fingers dip inside my pants. His breaths quicken, his nose nudging the top of my shirt.

A knock on the door brings a growl from Inchel’s chest, and I thank every god I can think of as the guard’s muffled voice calls from outside. “Counselor, the Challenge.”
Inchel’s fingers dig into my flesh just an inch shy of my clit before he removes his hand, kissing the top of my breast. “Later, my sweet Tatha.”
Sharp clicking footsteps take Inchel from the room, and the guard and second man file back in. A metallic slide and click tells me this room is barred and locked from the outside. How long will this drug last? I need to kill these men. I need to get to Kem. I need to rip Inchel’s head from his neck.
With Inchel gone, I can breathe a little easier, and I focus on my muscles, trying to force feeling into my body.
The second man calls out from across the small room. “I think her breathing is changing.”
Shit.
Quick steps approach, and I feel someone leaning over me, and the guard speaks right above my face. “Hmm. It’s hard to tell.”
“Better dose her again, just to be sure.”
“What if too much kills her?”
The second man laughs. “What if she wakes up?”
“The two of us should surely be able to subdue her.”
“Don’t be so sure. I’ve heard stories of this dragon.”
The guard grabs my chin, turning my head. “Really? This little thing?”
“Just dose her.”

A sharp sting pricks my neck. My body gets heavier.
