“It never got that far. The female that they wanted to share never gave them a second glance. They left the clan, angry because the rules wouldn’t get bent for them.”

“You’re positive they haven’t been back?”

“They wouldn’t be allowed back if they showed up tomorrow. No one defects and is welcomed back. Not here.” He shrugs. “Not sure if the Blackhearts would take their own back.”

My father steps forward. “Pass around the word. If anyone is caught harboring them—I don’t care what clan it is—their entire village will be wiped from the face of this goddess-forsaken planet we’ve been dumped on.”

With a short nod, the scout jumps on his steed and rides away.

Because we’re brave males, we spend the night in their territory before heading home at dawn. Just to make a point.

At first light, we ride back to Solaya where my grandfather waits.

“What’s the word?” he barks.

“Two Southpeaks went rogue. They met up with Blackhearts.”

Grandfather nods. “Blackhearts said they had four who left. That makes a group of six males.”

“And neither clan will claim them.”

“But the Southpeaks will turn them over if they try to hide there. We made it clear that anyone who harbors them will get the entire clan wiped out.”

“Phew,” Grandfather grins. “That’s steep. We only threatened to wipe out the Blackheart males. Not the whole clan.”

That’s the first smile I crack since I found out about Shally. It feels tight on my face.

“I’m leaving to search the woods further north. Near Blackheart territory.”

Grandfather nods. “Good. Because a couple humans near Serenity where your other grandfather lives saw a group of—”

“Six males?”

“Five, actually. And a female.”

“Half-blood? With light hair?”

“Nay. They claim she’s a female orc. One of the Blackheart clan, dresses in leathers with gold stitching.”

“I’ll kill them anyway. Torture them until they tell me where she is.” I clench my fists. “It can’t be a coincidence that there’s two separate rogue groups.”

“M’boy. You’ll find her first and see if she knows where Shalia is being kept. Once our girl is safe, I don’t care what happens to the rogues. Not even the female.”
