“But we’re still making our plans to leave?” she asks again.

“Aye, my love.” This time she doesn’t flinch when I call her that. “Whenever you are ready. Let’s just rest up, take time to pack food, and together decide where we’ll go.”

“Together,” she murmurs.

By the time she asks again tomorrow, I’ll have a new excuse. I’ll go grab the males and she’ll want to see them so she’ll put off leaving. I’ll do anything to keep her here as long as possible. To make her take a chance on us.

I just need to be careful so I won’t scare her away. While Latsil wanted to lock her up and never let her leave until she remembers, I want to show her different. I want her to see how wonderful our home is—because if she never regains her memory? At least she’ll want to live in Solaya, even if we’re strangers, because we’re kind. Because she wants to. Because she realizes that the rogues lied.

Chapter Twelve

––––––––

JOGUG:

EARLY IN THE MORN, before the sun even shines, someone calls for Bakog. He heads to the door and there’s hushed whispering before he returns.

“Everything okay?” I mumble as he scoops me up into his arms.

“Aye. I have to head out for a bit. You’re welcome to stay in here if you want, or go explore outside. Either way, I’ll have someone check on you, bring you food or a bath. Whatever you wish.”

I like this. I like that we’re checking with each other. It makes me feel like I matter. Like we’re an actual couple, like I’m not mated to the wrong male.

“Be careful. I’ll see you later today?”

“Yes. I’m sorry I’m leaving you alone your first day.”

I scoff. “No one needs to take care of me, Bak.”

His smile is somewhat rueful. “I guess not. Not anymore, though I’d like to.”

“Well, I guess I’ll let you. You already told me I’ll never get away.”

His mouth is ruthless when it comes down on mine. “Never. Now I’ll just work on making sure you never want to.”

I’m already there, though I know to keep my thoughts to myself because I don’t trust his clan. And surely, like I did, he’ll come to realize we’re safer away.
