“Aye, you have my word as Prince Bakog, grandson of King Brachard. The alliance between Lady Hannah and Prince Brun.”

Excitement runs briefly over his face when he realizes exactly who he’s speaking to. Proof that the arranged marriage worked.

He nods, then reaches for his spear and raises it to the sky for his own people to see. “The word of the West Mountain orcs is good. We will retrieve the prisoners.” He holds his spear upright long enough for all to see the bargaining has been reached before he mounts his horse and leaves with his guard.

As soon as they’re gone, our people huddle.

“What the fuck, Bak?”

“Are you crazy?”

“How the hell you gonna pull this off?”

But it’s Azorr I’m waiting to hear from. “Good job, son. I know what I was thinking, but let me hear your plans.”

“Establishing a seed is as easy as giving him the chance to meet her. And letting the Blackhearts know a mating is beneficial? We don’t have to tell them it’s an alliance between Oshin’s daughter, Negan, and Varguk. All we have to do is praise how we appreciate my own parents’ mating because it brought forth me and my siblings.”

“Exactly.” Azorr grins.

“They’re not going to like that,” Tok says. And he’s right.

“Not until we pair it with something else that swings in their favor. The chance to meet Negan. We’ll have a party—mayhap in Creede. Invite all our friends. Oshin and his family and any Blackheart he wishes to bring. Varguk and his family and any Southpeak he wishes to bring.”

Tok’s eyes widen. “Creede will be okay with being overrun with orcs from three different clans?”

Azorr’s voice is softspoken. “Aye, we’ll be bringing lots of business to them, especially if we give them time for preparation beforehand. Mayhap call it a human celebration? The town is used to me and Abigail. Shalia. We’re celebrating her return and inviting friends to celebrate and spend their money.”

That works even better than I imagined. “A month might be ample time and should give us traveling time right before the cold season hits.”

Azorr nods. “We can dispatch two off to speak to Paul Benedict. The magistrate. The sheriff. We can meet up on the path home.”

“You and Terk. We’ll have enough manpower here to restrain three prisoners just with Tok.”

The beast, son of Ogol, cracks his knuckles.
