She had to be here somewhere, but where?

Then he heard a faint huffing coming from the closet. Weird.

Killian walked over to the closet, slid the door to the right, and noticed a pile of clothes. An unnatural pile of clothes. Anne had to be beneath them. Why was she hiding? Was she afraid?

He pushed the clothes to one side. He saw the top of her head.

Anne was trembling. Her eyes were closed. It didn’t take a genius to know she was scared shitless.

“Anne,” he said softly.

She opened her eyes, screamed and aimed something at him.

“Aargh.” Killian fell back onto the bed, rubbing his eyes. Shit. They burned.

Oh sweet Jesus. She sprayed him with something.

He lay there for a minute.

“Oh God, I’m so sorry.” He felt Anne’s hands on his arm. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was you.”

“What the hell did you spray me with?”

“Hair spray.”

He couldn’t open his eyes. “Get me a wet cloth.”

She brushed past him. He heard water running, and a wet cloth was placed over his eyes. He held the cloth and tried to sit up. Anne tried to help him, but he brushed her hands away. She’d done enough for one day.

What do you do when you get hair spray in your eyes?

“I think you have to wash it out,” said Anne.

Huh? He hadn’t realized he’d said it out loud.

“Come on. I’ll help you to the bathroom.”

Killian pulled the cloth off and squinted. His eyes were a little blurry and painful, but he’d live.

Fortunately, it was nothing he hadn’t gone through before. The service thought it would be good for everyone to experience being pepper-sprayed, among other things.

He walked to the bathroom and flushed his eyes with water. Anne was hovering behind him, wringing her hands.

“Jesus, woman, what were you thinking?” he asked when his eyes felt better.

Anne turned red. “I’m sorry. When I heard noises outside and then in the living room, I thought the man came back.”

“Didn’t Sam tell you I was coming over?”

She shook her head.

“It’s okay.” Killian looked at her distraught face. “I’m okay. Why don’t you come out to the kitchen, have a cup of coffee, and we’ll talk.”

“That sounds good,” she said in a small voice.

As they passed her bed, Killian noticed a piece of paper on the floor. He picked it up.

Sam left Anne a note explaining that Killian would be there the next day, since she had to be out of town.
