Anne jumped up. “Dinner’s ready.”

“Can I help?”

“Sure.” She pointed to a cabinet. “The silverware is in the top right drawer. If you want to open the wine, that’ll be helpful. I’ll grab the plates.”

He threw a dishtowel over his shoulder. “Whatever mademoiselle wants.”

Anne giggled.

After the appetizer, Killian didn’t think his mouth could water anymore, but looking at the massive bowl of spaghetti and meatballs and slabs of garlic bread, he was practically drooling. “This looks delicious.”

She placed the wineglasses on the table. “Will you pour the wine?”

They ate in comfortable silence, just breaking it to talk about mundane things. Finally, Killian was finished. He leaned back and rubbed his stomach. “That was the best meal ever. Almost as good as your lasagna.”

“Thank you.” Anne stood to pick up his plate. “I have dessert and coffee. Why don’t I put the dishes in the sink, and we can move into the living room?”

“Sounds good, but how about I help you pick up, then we can both sit in the living room? I can’t leave all this for you to do.”

It took him just a few minutes to rinse the dishes and put them in the dishwasher while Anne put the leftovers in containers and made coffee.

She handed him a cup, and they walked into the living room. Anne sat on the couch, and Killian sat next to her. Not too close but not far away.

“I started to ask you before if you’d like to go to Danny and Hailey’s house for a barbecue next week.”

Anne turned toward him and cocked her head.

“I think this is more than just going to a barbecue.” She bit her lip. “So we’ll be going as a couple?”

“Yeah.” His hand started shaking. Was asking a woman to be your date this stressful? “If you think you’d like to do that?”

Silence.

“I would like that very much.” She swallowed hard, her eyes searching his for an answer. “So are we exclusive or just a couple?”

Killian’s palms were sweaty. He reached for his coffee cup but stopped. “I’d like to be exclusive if you think it’s the right time.”

“Okaaay.”

This was the moment. The moment he had never thought would happen in his lifetime. However, he wanted Anne.

It was important to him to be a couple and exclusive. It was a huge step, but Killian felt ready. He leaned over to pull her closer and kiss her.

She reached for him. He hugged her to his chest. Her breath was ragged. Their eyes met, and he saw the desire in her. He brought her face close to his, closed his eyes, felt her closeness.

Then pulled away.

Something wasn’t right. Killian felt eyes on them.

He looked over at the window. A man was peering in. When he saw Killian looking at him, he ducked.

What the hell?

“Get in the bedroom,” he whispered to Anne as he jumped up from the sofa.

Anger coursed through his blood. He sprinted outside just as the man was turning to run. Killian tackled him.

“You’re hurting me!” the man screamed as Killian pulled his arms back and stood him up.
