His mind wandered as he drove. He wondered if Anne ever thought about their relationship. Did she want more? Did he? Could he see himself married with a kid or two or, God forbid, more? Would marriage be enough?

Anne interrupted his thoughts, shook her head slightly, and smiled. “Silas had a wonderful time. As did my parents, who just loved him and hated to see him leave.”

“Grandpa took me out into the woods to look for wild animals,” Silas said. “We saw a deer and lots of squirrels. I fell into a pond and got all wet.”

Killian chuckled. “That doesn’t sound like fun.”

“Oh, it was.” Silas jumped up and down in the car seat. “I opened my eyes underwater and saw duck feet. They were so cute. Then Grandpa pulled me out and brought me home.”

Anne shook her head and sighed. “Boys.”

“Every night, Grandma put me on her lap, read to me, and then kissed me all over my face.” He scrunched his face. “Ick.”

“So you didn’t like being kissed by your grandma?” asked Killian.

“Maybe.” Silas thought about it for a second. “She’s nice and smells good.”

Killian knew Silas had little in the way of love and emotion in his life until Anne came along.

Hell, growing up, he hadn’t either. What he would have given for a grandma or even a mother who thought the sun rose and set with him and showered him with kisses. As for his father, he only took Killian into the woods to find a branch to whip him with. Nope—not going there. It wasn’t about him anymore.

“Sounds like you two had a great time,” he said to Anne.

“We did. But I’m glad to be home,” she replied. “And I’m so happy to see you.” She looked over at him, licked her lips, and winked.

He couldn’t wait until Silas went to bed so he could adequately welcome Anne home. His cock was getting hard thinking about the good time to come.

* * *

Anne turned slightly in her seat to stare at Killian.

He was listening closely to what Silas was saying, then his brow furrowed, and he seemed to get lost in thought. She wondered what was going through his mind. Did her relatives loving on Silas remind him of what he never had? Did he wish he had come with them? She sure would have liked that. She missed sleeping with him.

Silas had a ball and got along with everyone, and they loved him back. She hadn’t heard about the make-believe scenarios but could believe her nieces did that. Anne and her sister had played the same games only with her father, who had played along good-naturedly. Of course, he was older.

Vacation was over, and she had to be back in school on Monday. She had one day to decompress and be with Killian. Anne prayed the rest of the school year went smoothly. Although just thinking that made her wonder what was next. She’d already been hospitalized because of the home invasion and stalked by Jason. What was left?

When Anne felt eyes on her entering the airport, she spotted Killian standing by a coffee shop looking all yummy, wearing jeans and a black tee that showed off all his muscles. He had a little scruff on his face, giving him a slightly dangerous look. It took all her willpower not to jump him right there. Not that he would have minded, but she had Silas to think of.

Anne understood Killian’s feelings about marriage and kids, but his actions belied his beliefs. Killian was great with Silas, even warming up to her girlfriends’ kids. He was respectful of her decisions and honest with her. While he usually enjoyed being dominant in the bedroom, he was happy when she took the lead. They both could be vulnerable with each other. And… he was sexy as hell.

She wondered if Killian wanted more from their relationship. He had mentioned nothing since he asked her to be exclusive. Did he want more? Now? Never? Or in the future?

One of these days, they needed to discuss that.

Anne knew what she wanted—a future with Killian. What did Killian want?

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Anne and Silas scurried from the car to school under the large umbrella that barely covered them from the relentless downpour.

The ominous black clouds that greeted them when they left the house had erupted into a deluge. The rain pelted their faces, and water sloshed in their shoes. Why hadn’t she thought to wear boots or bring a raincoat?

It was not an auspicious start on the first day back.

Anne was still tired from vacation. Making love to Killian all night had been fantastic but used up any excess energy she had left. He’d left early for a job and wouldn’t return for a few days. She missed him already.

“Anne.”
