She knew it wasn’t the kidnapping because it hadn’t bothered Silas as much as it did her, even though he’d confessed to being scared.

He and Killian were keeping secrets. That’s all it was. She wasn’t a kindergarten teacher for nothing. Anne knew when kids were keeping secrets. But she wondered what it was.

Everything was going along with no drama, for which she was thankful. Jenkins was behind bars, although her darkest secret was she wished him dead. He frightened Silas, shot a man in front of them, and hurt her. He deserved to die.

However, cooler minds than hers prevailed, so he was in prison for a long time. Killian told her how Sam handled him, and while she was grateful for Sam’s friendship, she felt guilty that her friend was put in that position.

Oh! Who was she kidding? Sam was a loyal friend. You hurt her friends, she’d hurt you. Anne knew this about Sam and loved her just the way she was.

The phone rang as she was preparing to make lunch for her and Silas.

“Hello?”

“Anne, hi.” Speak of the devil. “Alex was wondering if Silas would like to spend the night. There’s a new PAW Patrol movie out. I know Silas loves them.”

Hmmm. She and Silas had made no plans. “I think he’d love that. When do you want me to bring him over?”

“Oh, we’re out and close to your house. We’ll pick him up,” replied Sam.

After hanging up, Anne informed Silas about the plans. The little boy was excited and threw a couple of things in his new PAW Patrol backpack that replaced the one Martin had thrown in the dumpster and stood looking at the front window. Anne would miss him, but a date with her new bath bombs, as well as a new book she’d been meaning to read, was on her mind. It was a win-win as far as she was concerned.

Anne was just about to open her book after a luxurious bath when the phone rang again.

It was Killian.

“Would you like to have dinner at the beach?” he asked.

She definitely would and told him he was in luck that Silas was staying overnight at Sam’s house.

He told her he’d pick her up at seven and they’d head over.

The day was turning out to be a perfect one—bath, book, babysitter, sexy man to have dinner with.

Anne read until six thirty and then got ready. Hmmm. What did one wear to have dinner at the beach? It would be chilly, so she wore long pants and a long-sleeved top. Maybe they’d walk on the beach. Again, cold sand. She got out her sneakers and a lightweight jacket—perfect. Anne sat on the couch and flipped through a magazine. Promptly at seven, the doorbell rang.

“Hey there, handsome.” Anne leaned over to kiss Killian, which he reciprocated with a longer kiss. When they finally pulled apart, Killian asked if she was ready. Now he looked like he was keeping a secret. What was going on?

“Tonight’s the full moon and a rocket launch,” said Killian. “I asked Laura to make us a picnic. I thought it would be romantic to see both.”

“Hmmm. I’ve never seen a launch. It should be spectacular with the full moon. How romantic.”

* * *

How romantic? Killian was glad she thought so. He really didn’t have a romantic bone in his body. Yes, he could handle going out to dinner or having sex, but thinking outside the box threw him.

Luke had given him the idea. It was something he had done when he and Grace were dating.

Killian asked Sam if she would mind taking Silas overnight. He wouldn’t tell her why, but she raised her brow, stared at him for a minute, smirked, and said sure.

Nothing got by that woman.

Sam had suggested Laura could make a picnic basket for him. He picked it up earlier, and when Laura handed him the basket, she gave him a big smile and winked.

Winked?

He was in trouble. Did everyone know what he was going to do? Or were they guessing?

Didn’t matter. He was on a mission. There was no Plan B or even C. But Killian was confident Plan A would be a success.
