He was neatly dressed in a charcoal gray suit.

In one hand, he held a folder, and he extended it through the window.

"What's this for?" he said, holding it tight as she reached for it.

She frowned at where his hand remained on the folder, refusing to let go.

"A case."

"What case? You're not investigating any cartels as far as I can tell."

"Just a case," she said.

He sighed.

Thomas had always been there for her. In many ways, he'd treated her like a daughter. He'd helped pave the way for her with the Rangers. Now, though, she could tell she'd asked one favor too many.

But she had to push this... she had to.

He deserved the truth, didn't he?

But what could she tell him?

Her parents were involved?

That this cartel was likely involved in their disappearance?

No... no, not yet.

She needed proof.

"Just some background research," she said, casually. "No big deal."

"The gang unit wants this destroyed once you're done. They're working a big case on Las Serpientes."

"No problem."

Thomas studied her with his granite-chip eyes. But then he shrugged, releasing his grip, and she pulled the folder through the window.

For a moment, her old mentor just watched her, his eyes tracing her features.

"How's Ethan?" he said.

"Going to be fine," she replied.

"Good... I like that white boy."

She smiled. "Me too."

Thomas pointed. "Don't see that too often. You have nice teeth."

"You have a nice car."

He rolled his eyes at the deflection. Then he just shrugged. "No more favors, Rachel. Not until you tell me what's going on."

"Yeah, yeah, sure," she said quickly.

She forced another smile--but he seemed to know this one wasn't genuine. He rolled up his window and began to pull out of his spot. He gave a little wave through the glass as he headed home for the night.
