I rub the back of my neck at the information that I should be keeping my mouth shut about.

He turns towards me, still sitting on the bench.

“Ryker… what are you going to do?” he asks, his eyebrows furrowing. “Did you tell Sam about this?”

Did I tell our General Manager that I might get deported and to start looking for my replacement? Hell no.

I have a plan and I need to hope that Juliet decides to bail me out.

“And have him start warming up my replacement? No… I’ve got a plan.”

“A plan to stay in the country without a visa? Do I even want to hear more of this? Will this make me an accessory to whatever laws you’re about to break,” he scoffs.

“I’m not going to hide out illegally. I’m a public figure anyway… I’d last a day if that.”

“So what’s the plan?”

I debate whether I should tell him but if anyone can keep a secret, it’s Seven. He wouldn’t tell a soul.

That’s why he has a shack on the ocean in a tiny village in Mexico. During his off-season he hides out in seclusion for months on end… just fishing and whittling on the beach by himself.

It’s not my idea of a good time, however, everyone deserves their peace. Our job is stressful and hard on your body. If he wants to zone out for a while to get his head right again before another crazy season, then let him be.

“I’m getting married,” I tell him, though I’m not sure if I have a bride yet.

“To Amelia?” he asks with a grimace.

Good to know he’s a fan. I’m not surprised he hasn’t seen the social media evidence that she’s not dating me anymore.

“No, not Amelia. Someone else that needs my help just as much as I need hers.”

“You sure that’s smart.”

“Nope. But if I want to play hockey for the Hawkeyes, I have to come up with a way to stay in the country. I don’t have a choice at this point.”

“Did you tell Sam what’s going on?” he asks.

Telling Sam so that he starts looking for my replacement is not on the top list of things I want to do.

“No. I’m going to fix this myself. I might need a witness to stand up with me.”

“You’re asking me?” he asks with a lifted eyebrow.

“Would you?”

He nods. Seven is the guy you count on to hide a body. He’ll show up, not ask too many questions, and never tell a soul.

“Yeah man, I’ll be there. I just hope you know what you’re doing.”

Yeah… me too.

Chapter Five

Juliet

“Mom…” I call out as I push through her apartment door on the third floor. “I’m here.”

The minute I walk through the door, the smell of freshly baked ziti and garlic bread wafts past my nose.
